Johnnie Hudman, of Albany, has watched the deer population increase in Shackelford County "since we've been a one-buck county."

The wildlife manager at Stasney's Cook Ranch said he thinks the area has the deer population to support the state's proposal to increase the limits on white-tailed deer hunting.

Plenty of improvements have been made over the years to the livestock business at the Matador Ranch, but many things are still much the same as they were a century ago. The old-timers would surely be surprised at the new hunting program, though.
