It has come to my attention that we actually have two female hunters in the membership of SCI Austin who are competing in the "Extreme Huntress Contest".  The fastest growing segment of the hunting world is women.  Our sport and the conservation of our natural resources are all the richer for their participation.

The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) issued a Temporary Preventative Quarantine for portions of Maverick, Dimmit and Webb Counties on August 2, 2007. The TAHC is now modifying that boundary as the areas currently within the zone have met the requirements for quarantine release.

The Texas Animal Health Commission, and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department have issued a summer and early fall alert for ranchers, hunters and anyone who may be going afield in Texas. One case of anthrax has been confirmed in a white-tailed deer herd on a game ranch in Uvalde County, which is in an area of South Texas endemic to anthrax. Although humans are also susceptible, no cases have been reported to date, and simple precautions can effectively reduce the risks of humans contracting the disease.

A lifelong passion for preserving prairie land seeded by a high school summer job that didn’t turn out quite like he expected has earned Panhandle rancher Jim Bill Anderson the 2010 Leopold Conservation Award for Texas, a prestigious recognition conferred by Sand County Foundation and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department as part of its Lone Star Land Steward Awards program.
