Question:Free hunting anywhere

Summary:

Fun thread!  I'd take a very long tour and hunt all upland birds and all waterfowl across numerous states.  Woodcock, grouse, phez, snipe, all varieties of wild turkey, cranes, dove, ducks, geese, all varietys of quail, chukars, huns, sharpies, prarie chickens . . . leave Sept 1st and finish in Texas end of February.  Heck, I might never come home. : )

White Wing Dove Hunts

White Wing Dove Hunts
Summary: Saw a couple of collard dove in Allen recently -- maybe they have been around before but this was my first time to notice them.  Season looks good indeed.  Same for quail!!!!

New addition to the Family

New addition to the Family
Summary:

Got your email and sent a reply.  Yes, I am a NAVHDA member.  I did it primarily to test my pup at the Natural Ability level, as I agreed with the breeder to do so when i bought the pup.  The Lone Star Chapter is a good group but also too far for me to participate frequently in their events (nearly all are held around Austin).  They've talked of organizing some less formal training days in the DFW area, as there are several members here.  I hope to participate in those events if they get off the ground.

NAVHDA is a good organization, from what I can see, in that they promote the development of versatile breeds and they test against a standard rather than compete against other dogs.  Everyone is supportive of each other and encouraging, and I was surprised by how many of the folks are newcomers to gun dog training.  I have the green book and DVD -- basic but helpful.  You can see on another thread that I posted pics of the training table I built using the plans from NAVHDA -- it was worth it IMO.

Since you're in Lubbock maybe we can meet up to hunt sometime -- I hope to get my quail lease again next season (it is near San Angelo).  Enjoy your summer work with Darling -- be sure to get her into water often, work her on some birds as frequently as you can, and get her broke to the gun if she isn't already.  Fun times -- lots of work, but fun.

D/FW group

Summary:

Welcome to the forum, Cody.  If by group you mean a dog training/hunting club, I know there are a few in the metroplex.  I am a member of the Lone Star Chapter of NAVHDA, and with a GSP that might interest you.  Only problem is that most of their events take place near Austin -- there has been, however, some talk of organizing some informal training days and such in the DFW area (plenty of members in the metroplex).  I have not trained with any other clubs.  I also have access to a place near Tyler that is nice for some dog training, and I would gladly get together with a few other folks informally to train sometime out there as well.

If you mean hunting and such, we could certainly organize a few get-togethers.  I recently left a post about a dove lease that is fairly convenient to the metroplex, so you might want to check that out.  If it interests you, send me an email direct and I can let you know what field I will be on and how to go about signing up to be part of the group I hunt doves with.  Duckwhacker is correct -- for quail you must go west.  I have had a quail lease out near San Angelo for the last two years.  I have never hunted pheasant but would be interested in a trip to Oklahoma or somewhere to give it a try.  As for ducks, I tried it once this year (first time ever) using a day lease and had a good time.  I would be interested in some kind of group duck hunt trip this year for sure.

But this is TEXAS!!!

But this is TEXAS!!!
Summary:

Hey Hntr,

I got my pup, Arrow, out of central Wisconsin (Neillsville).  Only time I have ever been there is when I went to pick him up -- postcard, picture-perfect scenery around every bend!  I often wonder if Arrow curses me for taking him out of there to spend his days chasing west TX quail rather than sneaking along the snow covered grouse woods.  Too cold for my taste in winter, but I hope to go back up there and chase some birds in the fall someday.

Thanks for the pics -- beautiful!

Quail Barrels

Quail Barrels
Summary: I received this info (passed on from my pup's breeder) on how to build quail recall pens from 55-gallon plastic drums.  I have cut a couple of them but have not yet finished construction -- they appear to be simple in design and take up minimal space.  Once I am done and have tried them out a bit, ...

2007 Quail Unlimited National Championship Dog of the Year Trial

2007 Quail Unlimited National Championship Dog of the Year Trial
Summary: Amen!  If it did not interfere with the special new youth spring turkey hunt, I would be interested in attending.

Quail Unlimited and Budweiser Renew Adopt-A-Covey Program

Summary: If the dry conditions persist, things may get very bleak for the west and southern portions of Texas as well.  Last year the drought hammered what was a decent bird population.  January was better than average, but we need plenty of spring rains if we are going to get a hatch and young birds to live into fall . . .

fingers are crossed

Summary:

Amen -- my main disappointment has not been lack of birds in the bag but lack of birds for the dog to work.  I would gladly go all season with hardly any birds bagged if I could just get him on enough wild quail to draw out his point and give him much needed first year experience.  I agree -- watching a dog work is very worthwhile!
