New in Texas

Summary:

Aquilla is a TPWD WMA that is Public Hunting. You will need to get a Texas Drivers License or pay out of state fees,  Texas Hunting License and the Annual Public Hunting Permit to hunt at Aquilla. I have been and seen lots of deer and ducks. I bet there are some rabbits here and there and I have heard that the turkey are there but I have not hunted turkey at Aquilla. Its worth the trip for deer and ducks.

New to hog hunting/ Public Unit 607

Summary:

I have hunted Unit 607 and most of the hog sign that i saw was just past the creek on the left side of the trail. Enter the WMA from the side not the entrance on hwy 7, drive as far back as you can and the walk thru the gate and down the trail. You will see the hog sign on your way back. Take in mind that this was at the beginning of january so their patterns may have changed. Good Luck...

Im going to go to Granger in the morning and do a little hog hunting and will let you know what i see.

Natinal Forest

Summary: Sweet deal, its always an accomplishment to get a buck on public land and only the 2nd time out. Congrats Bob.

Help

Summary:

In the Davy Crockett National Forest you will only need a valid Texas Huntintg License, hunter orange vest and cap or hat of some kind and a COMPASS is a must for every trip and I mean a must, no exceptions. I have been hunting the Forest for 15 years and I still get turned around sometimes if I dont have a compass. I have helped guys out that were completely lost and miles away from there camp that did not have a compass. If you are hunting the Sam Houston NF I can't help you because I have never hunted it, but I think it is bow only. Shoot me an email if you are hunting the Davy Crockett and I will turn you on to a couple of spots to start hunting. Also, be careful in the Davy Crockett because there is some of the State land, Unit 116 and 117, you will need a State Annual Public Hunting Permit to hunt or even be driving thru this property and the game wardens don't play up there. Make sure you tag your deer before you drag it out of the forest because they will ticket you if it is not properly tagged. Also, you have to camp in the designated camps or you will get a ticket. Don't cut down any wood for fires but there should be plenty laying around from fallen pine trees. I can tell you where there is a shower that costs a couple of bucks and is not far from the camp off of Forest Road 524 and where there are some prime hunting spots no more than a mile from the camp. If you take your ATV you need the following, helmet, eye protection, and state registration. You can get the registration at the same place you get you tags for you auto and it cost $12.(the tags are only good thru March so if you have an ATV you have to renew them in March if you go scout in the spring). You can only drive across the roads not down them or you will get a ticket. Get a Map of the forest, they can be purchased at the store in Kinnard for $7. Let me know if need more information and watch out because there are plenty of huge bucks running around in that area. Get into your stand early and if you have the stamina hunt all day because the other hunters will push the deer around.

Austin public land hunting pretty much sucked

Summary:

Hey George, which public land did you hunt? I may be able to give you some pointers as to where some good spots are located.

New in Houston, Whant to learn, join and hunt!!

Summary: Hey, welcome to the forum. Shoot a couple of the bows and pick the one you like the best. Get yourself a Public Hunting Permit and checkout the places around you. I suggest that you get some kind of stand, ladder, loc-on or climbing stand. Checkout the National Forest Lands in East Texas, lots of oppertunity for deer hunting that is free or will only cost the price of the permit and trip to go hunt. I'm not sure where you can shoot a bow in Houston but someone will surly chime in and give you help there.

Seriously considering Lake Meredith

Summary: Allen, to answer some of you questions...ATVs in designated areas only. The area is 45,000 acres total but I think that includes the lake. The lake is the best Walleye lake in Texas. The Duck and Goose hunting is supposed to be awesome. There should be some quail and pheasant on the area. It should be a great trip but I think the rifle season with the cooler temps and available bird and waterfoul hunting would be better and nicer for camping purposes. I saw nothing about hogs but it is the only public Muledeer hunting in Texas. I suggest a good pair of binos or a spotting scope if you have it for spot and stalk hunting. Lets go get em!

cost of shells, lets help eachother out

Summary: The public hunting permit would be your best bet, its only $50 and you get to hunt all over the state.

Ranch on Saturday 7-16

Summary: That is a real bummer Budd. Hunting the Public land is not a curse and you will kill deer if you put in the time.  There are tons of public hunting areas that allow you to hunt all seasons. I dont have a lease either this year and we will be hunting the forest most of the time. I am blessed with friends that have land and my grandmother has property that I get to hunt but I spend more time on public lands than any other. Depending on how the deer population looks at the ranch, maybe I will be able to take a couple people on some bow hunts for doe. I'm going back to see how things look around the feeders we put out a few weeks ago.

Options near San Antonio

Summary: I have never hunted the SHNF but I do hunt the Davy Crockett National Forest and a couple of the TPWD WMA areas. I have hunted Aquilla WMA and saw both bucks and doe. If you dont want to spend a ton of money and you don't have friends with land, public land will be your only other option. I can give you some pointers and leads on where to hunt if you go to DCNF or Aquilla. You will have plenty of public land around SA for some dove and waterfoul hunting if you get the Public Hunting Permit from TPWD. If you have questions let me know.
