What are the POINTS used for and how are they earned?

Summary:

The stars are part of the forum software and are assigned every 500 posts I believe, with a limit of 10. It is suppose to give you a sense of comfort that someone is an active contributor and so you can trust what "help" they are giving you I suppose.
