Seems that my friend of his needs some cedar cleared off of their ranch near Burnet, Texas and the Government will pay her $25 per acre. We went out yesterday to take a look around and start the clear...
Brother finally connected.
Summary: My brother, Donny and son Riley and I went hunting again at the lease in Leander on Sunday evening. I say a nice trophy white house cat, an 8 pt and 3 doe but couldnt get a shot at the doe. Donny saw some small bucks and some doe out of range. Riley didn't see anything. My brother was the lucky one...
National Forest Doe PermitsSummary: Thats awesome Chris...my daughter and I also got drawn for doe permits but ours are for the DCNF. We are pumped. I'm gonna try to take her to the lease this weekend for a crossbow hunt on youth opener. Then I will be in the DCNF on rifle opener and then the following weekend I will be back at the DCNF with my daughter to try to fill the doe tags. My hunting buddy will have his 3 boys out there on the second weekend, so we are going to have a big youth camp/hunt weekend. Will have plenty of pics when I return.
Antler PicsSummary:
I love finding sheds, kinda like a bonus. Very cool, hope you find another one of those big East Texas bucks to chase this fall. I will be in your neck of the woods for rifle opener...my brother and I will be hunting the DCNF. We are taking off early Friday morning before opener to get a decent camping spot and maybe scout the Big Slough Wilderness area for some of those big East Texas swamp bucks. We will be camping at the camp off of HWY 21. We plan on doing some rattling and filming, hope we get lucky...pray for cold weather. A buddy I hunt with was hunting the DCNF bow season 1998 and shot a nice 8 pt that went 126 and is in P&Y. He found one of the bucks sheds while he was tracking the buck after the shot and the buck would have been bigger the previous year. There was a drought in East Texas that year so the deer didn't get the same nutrition. Dove decoy setupSummary: I use the metal pole that electricians us to run wire thru on comercial jobs. The pols are 1 to 1 1/4" in diameter. I have 4 poles that are 10 ft long with a coupler to attach them together. I drilled holes in one end of each pole and tied a heavy braded string thru the hole on one and then run the string thru the hole on the other pole. I tied 4 fishing leaders to the string about 12" to 18" apart, and pass the leader thru an eyelet on the back of the decoys. I had to modify the decoys by cutting the bottom of the decoy off and then pushing a small piece of lead into the decoy tail to get them balanced so they would look like a dove on a wire. I use a black sheetrock screw to attach the lead to the decoy. I stand up one pole and I use wire to attach the poles to a fence post. Then I do the same with the second pole. Then all i have to do is pull the string tight that is passed thru the hole in the top of the second pole and tie it off on the top fence wire. I also have a string attached to the 1st pole to tie off and stabilize the whole setup. Dove will actually try to land on the string with the decoys. I dosent seem to matter that the decoys are below the string. Hawk even dive bomb the decoys and knock them off the leaders from time to time. I tell you with the dove poles setup, the airdove set out and the other decoys placed on the ground near the waters edge, its almost unfair. Many dove come back after making it thru a hail of lead to land with their plastic buddies. I also makes it easier for the kids to get some close shots. I will find the pics sometime and post them.
