This legislation, sponsored by Representative Bobby Jindal (R-La.), will amend federal emergency laws to prohibit federal, state, and local authorities from confiscating lawfully-owned firearms during emergencies or disasters. HR 5013 passed by a broad bi-partisan margin of 322-99.

U.S. Senate Votes to Protect Second Amendment Rights During Emergencies

Summary: Fairfax, VA - On July 13, the United States Senate overwhelmingly passed (84-16) an amendment (#4615) to the Homeland Security appropriations bill (H.R. 5441). This amendment -- sponsored by Senator David Vitter (R-LA) -- prohibits the use of funds appropriated under HR 5441 for the confiscation of lawfully possessed firearms during an emergency or major disaster.

House Overturns Mandatory Gun Locks Provision

Summary: This week, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to overturn the federal requirement that federally licensed firearm dealers provide a "secure gun storage or safety device" (e.g., trigger locks, cable locks, gun safes, gun cases, lock boxes, etc.) with the sale and/or transfer of every handgun.
