FWS Lists Sage-grouse as Candidate Species

Summary:

On March 5, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) had decided that the greater sage-grouse was warranted for listing under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), but that the listing is precluded at this time due to higher priority listing actions, according to the Wildlife Management Institute. The decision establishes sage-grouse as a candidate species and allows states to continue to manage the species, including managed hunting where appropriate.

USA: Archers take aim in Hoyt Pro/Am Tour

Summary:

More than 1,250 archers competed in 31 categories during the Hoyt Pro/Am Tour Friday through Sunday at Uchee Creek for prizes totaling $100,000.  Archers shot 40 targets. The 3-D foam targets included antelopes, deer, boars and wolves. The archers shot at known and unknown distances during the event.

DUCKS UNLIMITED HONORS TEXAS HEROES OF CONSERVATION

Summary:

Ducks Unlimited will recognize five Texans for their individual conservation commitments in Austin, Texas May 1. The Texas Heroes of Conservation evening, including; cocktails, dinner, honors presentation and auction, will be held at the Renaissance Austin.

Toyota Texas Bass Classic Returns to Lake Conroe October 1 – 3

Summary:

The Toyota Texas Bass Classic (TTBC) will return to Lake Conroe in 2010. The tournament received tremendous support in its first year on the Houston-area lake and will be held for the second time October 1 – 3. Ticketed activities for fans, including concerts, weigh-ins and expo areas, will take place October 2 and 3 at the Lone Star Convention & Expo Center. The event benefits the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) and its outdoor recreation programs. 

Culbertson and Davis score the first win for Bass Champs North Region at Lake Fork

Summary:

After the original kick off for the North Region had to be postponed due to dangerous winter weather, things got back on track March 13 as 471 teamed competitors merged on Lake Fork. This was the highest participation in the north region since 2005.

Supreme Court ruling means no lake for Dallas

Summary:

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday drained the last bit of life from the city of Dallas and Texas Water Development Board plan to build a massive reservoir called Lake Fastrill along the Neches.   Instead, that land will become a wildlife refuge managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

$76.5 Million Awarded to States for Conserve Imperiled Fish and Wildlife

Summary:

Department of the Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced today that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will distribute more than $76.5 million to the fish and wildlife agencies of the 50 states, commonwealths, the District of Columbia, and territories to help conserve and recover imperiled fish and wildlife through the State Wildlife Grant Program.
