Caddo National Grasslands

Caddo National Grasslands
Summary:

Good to hear from you Ron. Those are some crazy hog wallows. Are you allowed to night hunt at Caddo for hogs?

Monthly points?

Summary: The point system "credited" a bunch of past posts as part of the migration last night to this month. As we polish off the new forum system, we will run an audit script that will return the points to their accurate number for Sept. It will take a couple of days.

Moon Phase Calender

Summary:

Allen and I spoke with Danny Smith of the Smith Ranch in Centerville this past weekend and his opinion is that full moons are not a great time to hog hunt because the hogs move very late and not for very long. In his experience - and he runs a Hog Hunting Lodge - during New Moons the hogs move in the late afternoon and most of the night. His URL is www.hoghunting.com and he seems to know what he is talking about since he is booked guiding Hog Hunts seven days a week from October to April. I would love to hear other people's experiences?

TexasHuntFish.com is 8 YEARS OLD!!! We would like to give you a Birthday Present!
Summary: I am sitting in a tower blind in South Texas with Justin Blalock. He is on his first hunt - hog and coyote - today at the Marisol Ranch on the Nueces River just outside of Uvalde, courtsey of Robert Dullnig. He shot a gun for the first time last night. We took him to the range and taught him basic gun safety with a lever action 30-30, .44 pistol, .223 semi-auto rifle, 30-06 bolt action, and 12 Guage Shotgun with slugs. We haven't seen any pigs yet but I will keep you posted.

"Almost Live Report" Texas Trophy Hunters Association (TTHA) Houston Show

"Almost Live Report" Texas Trophy Hunters Association (TTHA) Houston Show
Summary:

Ok – I am done for the first day. I have been typing for four hours trying to tell the story of spending four hours at the show. Interesting, it has taken me as long to tell the story as to experience the story. Thus, tomorrow night, there will be no story because I will be attending her 20th Reunion Party.

I will probably upload a bunch of photos on Sunday but with not as much commentary.

The last company to talk about tonight is Quadzilla. Awesome!

Stan Waddell, Monster Sales Manager sold me like a child on buying one of their Performance Chips for the Hummer H2. It is his birthday and he told me he had to sell something to someone to justify his trip down to Houston from DFW.

I decided to splurge on the special discount show pricing (what a sucker I am) with the logic that when I see these guys in two weeks at the DFW show if my gas mileage and other “benefits” are not experienced, I will write a horrible product review and they will say sorry and give me back my money. J Happy Birthday!

Mr. Waddell demonstrated the excellent Customer Service of Quadzilla by walking outside the show and installing this sweet little device on the Hummer in the parking lot.

DAY TWO: "Almost Live Report" Texas Trophy Hunters Association (TTHA) Houston Show
Summary:

OK - now for PRODUCT OF THE SHOW....

Elusive Wildlife Technologies, LLP

www.elusivewildlife.com

At first I wasn't interested in some goofy light that I clip on to branches because I can't find my way to or from my "hunting spot." First of all, I carry a great flashlight, I carry a great GPS, and I scout where I am going to hunt before I hunt. Soooo, I wasn't interested...

But then Mr. Scott York showed me the "green" led. A tiny little light the size of my thumbnail that I could put on the roof of a deer stand or even inside the Hummer or on the frame of the Polaris and it would give me enough ambient light to do what I have to do with nothing in my hands.

Then he played the “good father” card. In case you don’t know, I am an Eagle Scout.  This means I am on medication for being overly prepared at all times, overly organized and hyper-vigilant regarding my surroundings. When my kids are on a boat at night I have a “D” cell battery powered strobe light that you can see from the moon. It is so bright it hurts to look in the direction of the strobe. I clip it on to their back and as the run around they look like huge fire flies. Mr. York showed me a much more convenient, less bright, yet very visible within 100 yards, tiny flashing beacon that I can put on the kids. Because it is so small and light and attaches magnetically, I can use it when the kids are anywhere, dressed in anything. This Halloween – guess what my kids will be wearing!

Of course this also works for adults when jogging, biking or walking at night in an urban environment. He even had some magnetic tail lights for if your trailer lights go out or to enhance your boat lights and the list of applications goes on and on and on.

Since today is “Sales Tax Free” day in Houston, I tried to convince them I was going to use them as ear rings and thus they should not charge me sales tax. This didn’t work.

If I don’t see these in Academy, Cabela’s, Bass Pro and other stores before Fall I am going to be shocked!

Way to go Mr. York and your business partner who was busy so I didn’t catch his name.

Day 3: "Almost Live Report" Texas Trophy Hunters Association (TTHA) Houston Show

Day 3: "Almost Live Report" Texas Trophy Hunters Association (TTHA) Houston Show
Summary:

The Nocturnal Nightmare.

I have heard about this wildlife feeder but never seen one in real life. Apparently, it opens during the daytime only and lets the animals eat. The idea is that by providing food only during the day time, you are going to draw the animals out earlier before dark and longer after sunrise. Also – it prevents the hogs and raccoons from having their way with your feed because it closes tight at night.

I think this product is in dire need of a TexasHuntFish.com Field Report with camera set up Day and Night to see if it has an effect.

Survival pack and/or hunting day pack. What's in yours?

Summary:

Good point. I always bring a "safety" bag when I go hunting. Depending on the location, elevation, size of ranch, how many other hunters, and weather conditions, I pick and choose from my "safety" bag other items that I put in my pack. I think about this before every hunt, morning and night. The list I wrote above is what I have on me ALWAYS.

The "safety" bag has back up flashlights, back up knifes, rain gear, flare gun, back up walkie talkies, video camera, exotic animal identification book, gun wipes, bug repellent, hand wipes, 12v adaptor, fuses, tape measure, 2nd leatherman, gutting knife, more bullets, first aid kit, and anything else a self-respecting Eagle Scout should have.
