Summer Hogs

Summary: in the summer months i have seen most hogs late in the evening and at night

Hog meat tenderizer

Summary:

It all starts with how you treat the meat after a kill, we like to soak our hogs or deer in ice water with a little bit of vinegar, then if I grill deer or wild boar I like to marinate in Italian dressing for at least 4-6 hours or best if over night.  Milk also works good to marinate or any type of fruit juice, pinnaple, etc..  We like to also take our wild game to a meat processor to get processed into steaks, pork chops, roast, etc and the meat usaully comes back to us in great condition.  I recomend purchasing a wild game cook book and try different recipes and see which one works good for you to cook and eat the wild game while still tender and moist.

Using flour to attract hogs

Summary:

Good luck, we had already been trying diseal corn, corn mixed with beer to get sour, and bread etc... The best thing that had been working was our hog pipe we set up in the sendero, but it would only get hit once or twice a month, then we tried the flour, it worked!!! Now that deer season is over we are going to focus primarily on hog hunting and trying to shoot a huge boar that is roaming our plcae and is estimated to weigh between 400 to 500 lbs, but is very smart and only comes out early in the am or during the night.

New and Need Hog Hunting Help

Summary:

I hunt a 680 acre place in Freestone county.  When we first started there we found 3 spots (there are only 2 hunters) where hogs had a trail they used regular.  We baited near those trails with corn and diesel to feel them out.  We buried this mixture 3' deep, mixed with dirt and packed, at each spot and scattered some on the surface from the trails to the buried spots.  It took a couple of days, but the next weekend we found holes 3' deep at each location.  We continued this for several weeks and had the same results even though we had several kills each week.  I then picked one of the spots and put up a feeder and 150 yds from that I put an open stand 8' high.  Each time I go I scatter more diesel/corn mix on the surface, and in 2 years there have been very few times I have gone home empty. The other 2 spots have no feeder and we have to redo the baiting each time.  It usually takes a day for the hogs to find it, but they keep coming back to check it out.

As an added attraction, I put a 3' piece of PVC pipe with a few holes anchored to a t-post about 10 yards from the feeder.    The hogs first got the caps off the end, and we had to put self tapping screws on them.  And then they were able to force the knots loose in the ropes.  So  we looped a cable through a hole in the cap with cable clamps on the inside of the caps.  This has worked well.  You will have to empty the pipes occasionally when the corn gets moldy from getting wet before all the corn is eaten.

My game camera tells us that more than one group will come almost every night, at different times, from dark to early morning.  I've  tried to stay awake all night so I could get more kills, but after I have 2 or 3 on the ground I'm not quite as excited to keep awake and  I quit.  We have dropped as many as 9 in one weekend.  That time 7 of them were over 150 lbs.

I hope this helps get you started.  Good luck and hunt safe.

Homer Martin Ranch for hogs??

Summary:

Hey Kev,

My good friend and I have been bowhunting (deer) there for years. I love the place. But, I don't think this is a great place to plan a hog hunt. He does have some , but not many. The only ones I've seen are right at dark or at night, and only on one part of the place (the river pasture). I didn't see a single hog this year in two trips. There are just not that many there. You may want to check with Maurice Chambers at brush country bowhunting near Sabinal Tx. Have been there 3 times a few years back and the hogs run the roads when he corns the roads. It's a high fence place, but hogs were abundant there.

Where's the bacon???

Summary: This year it seems like the hogs and deer just aren't moving much at our hunting properties.  Last year there was plenty of opportunity to harvest nice pigs over 200lbs and some good deer shot.  There are signs of hog and deer activity, but very little and when we put up a trail cam to take photos,...

Hog Growling?

Summary: I have been hunting hogs fairly frequently for the past few years in a heavy hog populated area.  I have heard many sounds from hogs when eating, rooting, fighting, and playing.  This past weekend, late night,  I was in a small tent type ground stand.  I had put out some boar attractant and some s...
