Funding Increases for Interior and Related Agencies Signed into Law

President Obama signed the $32.2 billion Interior, Environment and Related Agencies fiscal year 2010 (FY10) appropriations bill into law on October 30.   The bill provides a 17 percent increase in spending from last year’s appropriation for most of the natural resources and environmental agencies in the federal government, reports the Wildlife Management Institute.

15 Texas Freshwater Mussels Placed on State Threatened List

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission on Nov. 5 acted to place 15 of the 50 known Texas species of freshwater mussels on the state threatened list. Currently, state fisheries regulations allow harvest of most of these mussels, though practically none of them ever get large enough for harvest. The listing makes it a Class C misdemeanor to kill or collect them.

RED SNAPPER ISSUE IS HEARD IN CONGRESS

When the House Natural Resources Committee, Subcommittee on Insular Affairs, Oceans and Wildlife met on October 27 in DC, longtime South Carolina Congressman Henry Brown, Jr. made it clear he was standing up for all of his coastal constituents at home.  “When opportunities for fishing are limited or closed altogether, it does not just affect the charter boats or the bait shops,” Rep. DU Says Water Restrictions Threaten Waterfowl and Rice Production

Limited water resources in the Highland Lakes are driving the Lower Colorado River Authority to propose reductions in "interruptible" water, the lifeblood of rice farmers and other producers that rely on LCRA's irrigation districts in Matagorda, Colorado and Wharton counties. Ducks Unlimited (DU) representatives expressed their concern over the proposed restrictions at a public meeting on October 20 in Matagorda.
