Hunters and landowners participating in the Texas Big Game Awards (TBGA) this upcoming hunting season will not only see some new rules and changes for this year’s program, they will also welcome the debut of a  “Landowner of the Year” (LOTY) Awards program.

Gov. Rick Perry has named TWA Life Member Dan Friedkin of Houston chair of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission, and appointed Bill Jones of Austin to the commission effective Sept. 1, 2011. The commission oversees the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission today approved a 2012 budget that reflects a 21.5 percent cut in Texas Parks and Wildlife Department funding over the next two years. The agency is trying to limit impacts on the public involving state parks, fisheries and wildlife, and leaders say there are ways people can help.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission today approved $5.6 million in competitive grants for city and county parks across the state. Commissioners chose 12 out of 52 eligible grant requests for outdoor recreation facilities funding.

The Texas Wildlife Association supports Proposition 8 on the November ballot that amends the state constitution to provide for taxation of open-space land devoted to water stewardship purposes on the basis of its productive capacity.
