From the perspective of the Texas Wildlife Association and its members, the "Death Tax" is one of the largest causes of habitat fragmentation in the nation.  The tax not only threatens the agriculture industry, it threatens the very landscape that provides air, water, and home to our treasured wildlife.

As we all know, the midterm elections could be a major turning point in the direction of this country.  Federal spending, jobs, the economy and health care are topics at the top of the national mind, but a recent Safari Club International poll shows that sportsmen and women will also have a significant impact on the November elections — precisely because hunting is a major economic powerhouse in the U.S. economy.

On Thursday, August 05, 2010, the U.S. Senate confirmed Elena Kagan to the highest Court in the land.  To NRA members and gun owners nationwide, Ms. Kagan presents a clear and present danger to the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. 

Two pieces of federal legislation will enhance hunting, fishing and recreational activities on federally managed land. On July 30, the U.S. House of Representatives passed, by an overwhelming 404-1 vote, a pro-sportsmen amendment to House Resolution 3534. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and Senator Max Baucus (D- MT) also introduced a draft of legislation on July 28 aimed at dealing with the aftermath of the BP oil spill. Included in that bill is similar language that also earmarks 1.5 percent of the LWCF for securing public access to hunting, fishing, shooting, and other outdoor recreation.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced a new effort to encourage owners and operators of privately held farm, ranch and forest land to voluntarily provide public access to land for the enjoyment of wildlife-dependent recreation, including hunting or fishing, under programs implemented by state or tribal governments.

Whenever the President nominates someone to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, the highest court in the land, it is inevitable that everything they ever wrote or said will be reviewed with a fine tooth comb.  Simply put, these lifetime appointments to a position that will determine whether or not laws are constitutional are too important not to take time and caution when reviewing.

A recent poll conducted by a well known research firm indicates that access to hunting land is an important issue to many sportsmen and that restriction on private land in particular is having a negative impact on the amount of time spent in the field.

June 11, 2010 will be the next deadline for ranking applications to the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP), according to the Wildlife Management Institute.
