Here Come The American Hoggers

Summary:

Nope.  Pardon me for a little skepticism, but it looks to me like another (not so) indirect swipe at hunters.  On one hand A & E makes money through the sensationalism a show like that initially garners - few people know how rough hog hunting can get.  On the other hand A & E takes advantage of those who will just about sell themselves out for what they get paid to do a show like that, in a sense mocking their excesses and at the same time labeling the rest of us Joes who just love to hunt.

New and Need Hog Hunting Help

Summary:

I hunt a 680 acre place in Freestone county.  When we first started there we found 3 spots (there are only 2 hunters) where hogs had a trail they used regular.  We baited near those trails with corn and diesel to feel them out.  We buried this mixture 3' deep, mixed with dirt and packed, at each spot and scattered some on the surface from the trails to the buried spots.  It took a couple of days, but the next weekend we found holes 3' deep at each location.  We continued this for several weeks and had the same results even though we had several kills each week.  I then picked one of the spots and put up a feeder and 150 yds from that I put an open stand 8' high.  Each time I go I scatter more diesel/corn mix on the surface, and in 2 years there have been very few times I have gone home empty. The other 2 spots have no feeder and we have to redo the baiting each time.  It usually takes a day for the hogs to find it, but they keep coming back to check it out.

As an added attraction, I put a 3' piece of PVC pipe with a few holes anchored to a t-post about 10 yards from the feeder.    The hogs first got the caps off the end, and we had to put self tapping screws on them.  And then they were able to force the knots loose in the ropes.  So  we looped a cable through a hole in the cap with cable clamps on the inside of the caps.  This has worked well.  You will have to empty the pipes occasionally when the corn gets moldy from getting wet before all the corn is eaten.

My game camera tells us that more than one group will come almost every night, at different times, from dark to early morning.  I've  tried to stay awake all night so I could get more kills, but after I have 2 or 3 on the ground I'm not quite as excited to keep awake and  I quit.  We have dropped as many as 9 in one weekend.  That time 7 of them were over 150 lbs.

I hope this helps get you started.  Good luck and hunt safe.

Where's the bacon???

Huge Trophy Boar

Huge Trophy Boar
Summary:

I realize that this is legal and I realize that other people do it, but to me taking a penned animal out of its cage just for the sake of shooting it is not hunting at all...certainly not fair chase hunting.

Frankly, while this is not intended to offend anyone, a type of proposal like this gives hunting and hunters a bad reputation.  If you think antis don't pay attention you're fooling yourself.  There's was a situation in Alabama last year similar to this one, except most of the furor was over how the pig was killed, not that the pig was pen raised, although that came out and was ammo for the fire.

Split season dove hunting

Summary: As we were spending time at the ranch trying to harvest a nice buck or good eating hog, the second split season for dove was going on and man could I hear the neighbors just tearing them up.  After we got out of the blind and walking back to the truck I could see huge flocks of whitewings and morni...

Using flour to attract hogs

Summary: I am always looking for new creative ways to improve my hunting and fishing success.  Recently, I read a story about hunters that use regular store bought flour to attract hogs to the feeders and traps.  It makes sense because flour is a type of grain that I could see pigs enjoying.  But, what I al...
