My daughter's first "Hog and Coyote Hunt" (in her own words)

My daughter's first "Hog and Coyote Hunt" (in her own words)
Summary: I thought this was pretty interesting to read from the child's perspective. The truth - that she doesn't realize - is that we drove to the patio of an old house on the family ranch and just sat there, and then we drove around the ranch with a spotlight. We weren't really hunting, but in her mind we...

Amazing Wild Hog Skull found near Hondo, TX

Amazing Wild Hog Skull found near Hondo, TX
Summary: This is one of the most impressive hog skulls I have ever seen. According to the owner of Los Ranchos, they had seen this pig before and were amazed at how long his tusks were growing. Then they found it dead. The assumption is that maybe it died of starvation because the tusks had literally cut in...

average hunters priced out of hunting

average hunters priced out of hunting
Summary:

Hornhunter,

I was talking with Linda Campbell at Texas Parks & Wildlife about the cost of hunting in Texas and she had some great comments about the underutilized the Public Hunting opportunities.

Read page 108 in the new Outdoor Annual for 2008-2009.

Or, visit http://tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/hunt/public/

I had no idea they gave away 5500+ large game hunts each year; or that there is 55000 acres of walk-in birding hunting near urban areas; or 49 walk-in youth hunting areas, or that they give away 1200+ youth hunts for large game, exotics, and turkey each year.

For example, I looked up buck hunts in Travis County and there were only 632 applicants for 18 permits that include 1 buck, 2 does, and unlmited feral hogs. Last year of the 18 hunters, it says 4 harvested a buck. Not bad for a $10 raffle ticket with a 1 in 35 chance of winning.

Hogs near Lampass

Hogs near Lampass
Summary: The landowner started trapping hogs this year. They have caught about 60. His ranch is about 300 acres low fence. He sent me these photos to show me his new "ranch record hog".  Is that not a strange looking hog head? Although an experienced deer hunter, he wasn't too smart to get in the pen with...
