Public land hog hunting spots?

Summary:

Granger Lake is pretty good. I have a pet hog that's 8 years old now that was caught back there behind the dam while we hog hunted when she was just a pocket sized baby! Now she's 500 lbs of baby. There's some big uns in there! Bow only. I got stuck out there after hours once waiting on my hunting parter and I tell you, the ground moves out there after dark. We've had a few adventures there too. Several other spots in the same area that are public land.

Granger feral hog insight?

Summary:

We always had the best luck behind the dam. You better have your walking shoes on though to get to the back where no one else is. I took a cart with big bike wheels on it to carry things in and out and stashed it in the brush part way back. Had my name painted on it with spray paint just in case.

Hogs won't go in trap

Summary:

Yep, those tips are all good ones. Corn and Molassses or peanuts and the floor thing. We put plywood and then threw dirt on top of the plywood floor. Gets bloody and that's another problem. They smell blood so when they get trap smart, you need to scrub the trap down with bleach and let it sit for awhile to get that smell off. It's really best if you don't kill them in the trap but that's not easy to do either. Move the traps after a few catches too to fresh ground and territory. Hogs are smart and they do get trap smart.

CROSSBOWS OR COMPOUNDS- WHY NOT BOTH?

CROSSBOWS OR COMPOUNDS- WHY NOT BOTH?
Summary:

You have experience, I can tell.

For the comment on poaching, any weapon can be used for poaching, including a vertical bow or a .22. It's about hunters ethics. Ethics are not determined by weapon of choice as you know, it's by the choice of the person. No one group is any better or worse than any other group. There are some bad individuals in all the groups. As a guide, to be honest, the worst ethics based shooters were vertical shooters actually not gun hunters or crossbow shooters. The ones that refused to practice and would wound game and other game, want to sneak out the back gate so as not having to pay the harvest fee. I got the frickin gypsies before I realized who and what they were.

So, why would you "think" a crossbow is a good poaching tool? It sure as hell doesn't fit out the truck window, and it's louder than a vertical bow when shot. I'm curious.

New Bowfishing Magazine

Summary:

No, but i ha ve been trying to get Tim McKee with Texas Bow Fishing Association to start a magazine. Hard copy. I even have an editor and publisher lined up but he's afraid no one will want to pay $20.00 for the TBA membership plus the magazine. I really think it is a great idea, so I'm frustrated over the issue.

Will Crossbows Be Legal During Bow Hunting Season?

Summary:

Bowfish,

Again, it's not a group that does unethical things and we can't assume this is the case due to the weapon of thier choice. It would be the same as discriminating against all vertical shooters becuase their are some that don't/won't practice and hit the woods. We should not be discrininating due to weapon, but as to personal ethics of each and every individual hunter.

I've hunted public land myself several times, and experienced the hunters on top of hunters eacgh time, and have chosen to look to private property so I have control over that and my own hunting so as not to be disturbed and to allow me to leave eqipment set up as cameras, water, feed, stands, etc.  I just have to deal with wetbacks now.

Public land is just that-public to all.

Can't shoot grass carp......

Summary:

You can shoot these in public waters. What this page is talking about is the stocked Triploid Grass Carp that TPWD is releasing. My step son shoots them all the time and holds several records at TPWD.  So, if your on a public lake or river, SHOOT!

New rule changes as of Sept. 1, 2009

Summary:

Sorry Conchoman. It's due to people coming into Texas to fish for "trophy" alligator gar. This change includes and knocks out commercial fishermen too to one per day. At least they didnt limit us to only one and over 7 foot long per year.

They used info from "other" states, and the one and only study out of Texas that was done from 1986-1988, (21 years ago) and I testified this study was obsolete, and  this proposal should not be voted on at this time until they gained recent data/ info from Texas Fisheries and Sportsmen. The sponsor noted this would parallel Oklahoma and Lake Texomas rules, and Texas SHOULD reciprocate. They already had thier minds made up. We testified 10-1 against but they passed it anyway. Totally disregarding commercial fishermen who begged not to take away thier livelyhood.

Please help me out...

Summary:

Choke Canyon is another great water body for Buffalo, big gar, and of course, carp and Tilapia. Lots of gators to keep you in the boat too!

NO HOUSES ON THAT LAKE! Turn the radio up! The only lit up boat ramp that has over night is the Calliham unit. The others are out in the boonies unattended totally, so I always worry about leaving things overnight out there. Its a great lake to bow fish without worrying about disturbing home owners. There's camping at the lake, and several cheap enough hotels in Three Rivers to do the poor boy type trips. Good Fishing!

Cutters

Cutters
Summary:

Ha ha! Yep! Those are some nice cutters. I can tell you from experience, those will do ya. I was taken down by a smaller boar but he did a great job of ambushing me and cutting my ankle wide open. Took 7 months for the wound to heal closed. Had stitches for 10 days but they didn't do any good. Made me alot more cautious with going after wounded hogs inthe dark and thick vegetation. Guiding a coon ass buddy a few weeks ago, I found his Javelina still alive and he charged but I lifted my right leg and bounced off my left snake boot! Then, danced with the other coonie standing behind me on the trail. That was exciting! It was there first time hunting hogs and Javs. Didn't get hurt but reminded me again, to be more careful. That .44 didn't stop him quick enough.

I think it was all the bacteria on the teeth that caused longer than usual healing time.
