The Texas Wildlife Association Foundation (TWAF) and the San Antonio Livestock Exposition, Inc. (S.A.L.E.) have joined forces to offer five $10,000 Natural Resource-Excellence in Education Scholarships in the fall of 2011.

A record auction amount for a desert bighorn ram permit in Texas highlighted the TWA Grand Auction on July 9 at WildLife 2011, the annual convention of the Texas Wildlife Association.

The $10,000 Leopold award is the statewide accolade within the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Lone Star Land Steward Award Program, which also recognizes land stewards in 10 different ecological regions and in corporate, co-operative and special categories. The awards recognize Texas ranchers and other landowners who demonstrate outstanding, sustainable management of natural resources.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service may decide by the end of the year whether 11 species of mussels are endangered. If the answer is yes, the state's river authorities might have to recalculate how much water they can distribute to industry, farmers and growing cities and still leave enough in Texas' already stressed rivers to keep mussels healthy.
