How Did The First Day of Dove Season Go?

Summary:

Unfortunately, i had to work today and on Friday, but I will be heading down south to the RGV for the special whitewing weekend hunt.  I heard some great reports from friends that went out this am near San Antonio and found plenty of flocks some as big as 50 birds flying over corn and sunflowers.  I have been seeing plenty of birds all around the SA area and some fields I scouted in South Texas, the key is finding fields with good native food source and water nearby where the birds are actively using to drink.  Just because there is a tank of water does not mean birds are gonna use that tank, it has to have the right elements for doves to land and walk up to the bank and drink!!!

Had feeder and ladder stand stolen!!!

Summary:

Paper woods?I was on one close to a neighborhood and suffered the same thing. My first year on I was waving to people on fourwheelers that were not even on the lease.During the first year i saw the same bastards riding at night with rifles.I was unarmed so I drove past them hiding on side of the road.My suggestion is to cut your losses and get off!!

First time hunter needs help

hogs move around alot. one day you could see 20 of them then not see any for two weeks it just depends on if they are still in the area. The deer and the hogs will eventually find it, especially since they dont have as good of food source as normal with this weather

Harris County Wildlife Group 4TH Annual Hunting Heritage & Conservation Banquet

Summary:
All this and more will be available at our August 13th banquet. For all of you who who not only love to hunt turkey, but deer and quail as well, the NWTF hold these banquets to help raise funds to improve habitat that benefits all wildlife. Over the next few years the NWTF along with TPWD will be re-stocking eastern wild turkey's in several counties and the proceeds raised will help fund such projects. You'll have a great time at the banquet and help to raise funds for a worthy cause. To buy tickets or tables click on the partner page of our site at http://www.nwtfharriscountywildlifegroup.com/partners.htm or contact me to make arrangements. Also if anyone would like to support by donating some sort of hunt or merchandise valued at $350 or more, we will give you a table for 8 and advertisment or your bunsiness at the banquet.

Also, for those locally who would like to get involved with our chapter we're always in need of some new people and would love to have ya. We are big on outreach and getting others into the outdoors...especially children, women, and wounded worriors.

Our chapter tries to plan several initiatives and hunts a year with partnering ranches and outfitters who support what we do. These include 2 youth hunts, and two committee hunts for the committee members from numerous NWTF chapters and those who are new to hunting. This deer season we hope to hold our first womens hunt. For anyone wanting to support what we do and help us put on some of these hunts in the future for youth, novice and committee members please message me.

The Birthdate Effect

It might not be the first thing that you think of when talking about what causes deer to have smaller antlers than others, but birthdate can affect antler size. This is because the later buck fawns are born the less time they have to prioritize nutrients towards starting antler growth, body growth comes first. This means later born bucks will be playing catch up to earlier born bucks and will on typically have smaller antlers as yearlings (1 1/2). This is mainly an issue in the South, where fawns are born anywhere from May to October, which means those early born fawns have 5 more months of growth than later born fawns.

However, research shows this birthdate effect normally diminishes by 3 years of age.

Must Know for First time Hunter

Summary:

Scout the area you want to hunt first. Go deep in the woods if hunting public land. A hand held GPS works great for this, you can mark all of the spots that look promising on it. The deeper you go the further you are from everyone else, and the more deer you will see. One thing I never understood was most of the guys I've seen that hunt public land never travel very deep into the woods, or they walk and stalk. I've yet to see these methods work on public land. One thing you've got to remember is there will be more people there than you expected, and the deer will not be used to all of this new activity, and it will drive them deeper and further away from all of the commotion. Also buy a climber type stand, and you will have a lot more success. Public land hunting can be a lot of fun, but it is a LOT more work than a lease.

Hog or deer best for beginner Hunter

Summary:

I would go for the hogs first. They are abudant, easy to find a place to hunt them, cheaper, and its year round. I would improve my shooting skills with pigs during the summer and then try deer in the winter.

2011 Wild Hog Roundup Underway!!! 86 killed so far!

Summary:

I went out Friday night with a group for my first Thermal hog hunt.   Double Drop Hunts  http://www.doubledrophunts.com I have hunted before with night vision and been fairly successful if hogs were around to shoot at. But this night we were very lucky. We watched from a fence line downwind from a field and a large Oak tree where bait had been put out. At the time I was not feeling overly optimistic because it seemed too open a field. But after waiting for 40 minutes one of the guys whispers that he sees movement. And one after another hogs start coming into the field. There had to be at least 60 70 hogs. We were instructed to shoot on the count of 3. All the guns were suppressed and some had Thermal and others had night vision.
In Short order we had 9 hogs down. This was a rush and I really enjoyed the hunt.
