Sort your results:Existing Search Criteria:Refine Your Search:Search Results:Pup's first hunt testSummary: Well, last weekend I took Arrow to run in a hunting test put on by NAVHDA's Lone Star Chapter. Took place near Taylor, TX, at the Spanish Oak Hunt Club, and although I attended one of the chapter's training days last fall, it was my first test event. Part of my agreement with Arrow's breeder was ...
Mossberg Silver Reserve 12gaSummary: Mossberg International Silver Reserve 12ga over/under in about 90% condition on both wood and bluing. Clean bores and no cracks in wood. Worst spot on bluing is left side has a long thin mark where it looks like it was propped up and slid down as it fell over (no rust though). I'm told gun is le...
Bobcat pointers?Summary: Okay fellas, a little help if you could . . . I got my quail lease again this year but have it up through Spring Turkey season this time. It allows me to hunt varmints and small game as well. The lease is small (75 acres) but plenty of game and is located near San Angelo. It is primarily thick ...
were is the spot to be on saturdaySummary: Just outside of Graham on a lease by Green's Outfitters. We have a group of about a dozen or so, maybe more, when you count a couple of the TexasHuntFish team members. Looking forward to having them there, but sad to hear other things have made it so that Jason cannot join us. Family comes first, for sure -- who could miss that?!? Congrats to your Grandmother-in-Law for finding love so late in life!
Reports from outside of Graham are spotty -- they say Throckmorton County is not looking too good, but in Young County as you get closer to the towns of Olney and Graham things are much better. We'll hunt over a field of shredded sunflowers that sits about 20 miles outside of town, and the farmer has plowed some dirt in hopes of drawing in more birds. The property also has a couple of stock tanks as well, so our fingers are crossed. Good luck everyone!
Eurasian DoveSummary: Have only seen a couple in the North Dallas suburbs -- never seen one out in the field. I have mixed feelings about them -- I love that they don't count toward your bag limit and that they are a little larger than other doves. But, they don't count in a bag limit because they are exotic pests and I suspect that with the competition from huge whitewing populations, the mourning dove is already having a rough go . . .
What weapon do you....Summary: For deer I use primarily a Remington Model 700 BDL in 30.06 and topped with a variable Bushnell scope.
My favorite handgun is the Glock in .40 cal -- not any hunting with it, mind you, but when carrying a weapon for protection it fits the bill perfectly. Ultra reliable, simple, and effective when chambered in a large enough calibre.
But hands-down my favorite hunting/shooting is with a shotgun. Just started hunting birds a couple of years ago and absolutely became addicted fast. In those couple of years I have acquired four shotguns and like different things about each of them. For upland birds I like a double barrel; for dove and waterfowl I like a semi-auto. I also have an 870 Express Super Mag that is a great field gun, and I have a nice little 20 gauge SxS that I am looking forward to using on some quail this winter. My overall favorite is probably my new Beretta O/U in 12 gauge, but the Xtrema is a way fun gun, too. Glad I can't own just one!
Snake Avoidance TrainingSummary: I can certainly understand why. And for any dog working on warm days, there must be plenty of water and close supervision. I remember hearing about one year in the Dakotas when it was around 90 degrees on the phez opener and many dogs died or suffered heat stroke. I know I am always trying to not let the dog over do it but at the same time want to condition him so that he is not expected to just show up for hunting season in shape. Texas heat can be tough on all of us!
Snake avoidance training, IMO, is a good idea for all gun dogs, as we can have warm days during any month of the year and our dogs can have snake encounters even if not working in a field or lake.
Flounder gigging in Galveston areaSummary:
Welcome aboard, Don. Perhaps you've already seen it, but if not, check out this article on flounder stabbing: Perhaps Allen can chime in, or Texas.410, since both of them know a little about gigging flounder. Oh, and you should write up a journal entry (with photos, of course) about your niece's hunt while on leave. Thank her and her fiance for their service -- my brother is on his second deployment to Afghanistan and won't get leave until March, but I hope to take him turkey hunting when he is home.
