Where Will You Be Hunting This Weekend?

Summary:

Sadly, I'm in the same boat... unemployed since April 15, 2011 and don't know if I will be able to purchase a hunting license along with the Public Hunting Permit to take advantage of the Sam Houston National Forest.

I will be able to purchase a hunting license and have a friend who lives in Brady, Tx and has 50 acres with deer feeders set up and feeding all year long.  I know the fuel costs to get there and back will exceed the cost of a Public Hunting Permit, but I am guaranteed a full freezer of venison for making the trip to see him.  My wife and I usually celebrate Thanksgiving with him and his wife and so I'll give up the opportunity to hunt in the forest (for squirrels after deer season) to make sure I have venison in the freezer to feed the family.  Selling AMSOIL helps, but doesn't provide near enough to replace a full time job (yet).

New to Texas need to get my hunting fix

Summary:

Thanks for the invitation Jason...I wish I had something to offer you.   As you've probably heard by now Texas is over 90% privately owned, and most of the hunting is on leased land.  Simple permission to hunt ot just about unheard of anymore and the leases are usually pretty restrictive.  In particular our family is essentially invited to hunt every year (though we pay), so we're very limited to what we can do.

The only thing I can suggest is getting on TPWD's website and see if there are any more drawwings for WMA hunts left.  Kinda doubt there is.  There's also the opportunity to possibly hunt standby if someone doesn't show on those hunts.  There are also Davy Crockett National Forest and Caddo National Grasslands that can be productive.

1969

Summary:

I was 18 in 1969. Oh and we had a family deer lease near sheffield Texas-----Year round hunting and fishing (About 15miles of Pecos River) 21 sections to hunt at the staggering cost of $37.75 per family per year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How times have changed. At that time us kids would go for the weekend by our selves and never see anyone else. Not the same anymore.   SAD

How Did The First Day of Dove Season Go?

How Did The First Day of Dove Season Go?
Summary:

Dove season looks very promising this year in the Uvalde area. Three of my nephews went out to the ranch this weekend and hunted doves yesterday. All of them maxed out on the daily 15 dove limit. Here are a couple of pictures that they sent me.

Introduction to Bird Hunting?

Summary:

I'm real familiar with the Paris, TX area (my wife's family is from near there).  There are several game ranches and/or preserves in the area - you might talk to them and see if they'd let you come along with them.  I don't know anything about these guys, but here are some suggestions:

Pintail Farms - Honey Grove, TX

LoJo Ranch - Honey Grove
