Unfortunately, i had to work today and on Friday, but I will be heading down south to the RGV for the special whitewing weekend hunt.  I heard some great reports from friends that went out this am near San Antonio and found plenty of flocks some as big as 50 birds flying over corn and sunflowers.  I have been seeing plenty of birds all around the SA area and some fields I scouted in South Texas, the key is finding fields with good native food source and water nearby where the birds are actively using to drink.  Just because there is a tank of water does not mean birds are gonna use that tank, it has to have the right elements for doves to land and walk up to the bank and drink!!!

That is good news for me and I have always found that dry years are the best for dove hunting compared to years where we have a wet september, the best just dont need to fly as much when all the tanks have water and food source is ready available.  But, when all the tanks are empty and the fields are empty from drought, the birds really have to get up and fly further everyday or find areas that have both food and water nearby, those are the spots to be at to have some excellent action!!!

Thanks for the response, been hard trying to get some information out of some. I was in Tyler this last weekend and headed out to the land to see some 10 hogs while fishing (spring fed tank), 2 deer bouncing off as I approached my feeder (it hasnt had corn in it for some time but the deer are close), and saw a few dove. I'll be back up for opening weekend so hopefully my game cam will produce something positive and I'll bag some dove for NFL season opener. Go Cowboys!

im just south of san antonio i can see the tower of america from the hill that i hunt on and the doves should be verry good as long as a big storm doesint push them out in the next 48 days

I grew up just outsode of Corpus in odem and there are some real nice areas around there for country living, then there is Callalen with great schools on hwy 624, but if that was me moving to the area I would recomend the Orange Grove, Sandia area near the lake, there is the best whitewing dove hunting, plentyfull wildlife, deer hogs and better get your fishing gear ready because Corpus has some of the best fishing in Texas, i recomend investing in a boat, i dont mind showing you all the fishing spots also.  The area off hwy 359 outside of Alice TX or Kingsville area is another small country living area with nice ranch property.  i think once you move to the area if your a big sportsmen, take advantage of all the hunting from Dove, Duck, Quail, Turkey, Deer, Hogs, geese, Crane, exotics, it's a sportsmen paradise down here!!!

North Texas White wings are here ,late evening flights of 10 to 200 from feed to  trees,15 to 20 flights every day, found them 4 day before end regular season, High flyers tough shooting , but great. flying tree rows and high lines.

Is this on Public Land?

I've thought about getting a Annual Hunting Permit. I just haven't seen too many areas near San Antonio that allow hunting anything other than dove.

I have hunted public lands for dove, ducks, deer, quail, hogs, javelina and it's been great!!! I would say it's very worth the effort and it takes effort in deed by way of researching and gaining as much inside info about the areas and units you plan to hunt.  You can definitely hunt on the weekend, in fact the is a book that shows all the dates available to hunt for the different areas and most are on the weekend. Some locations have great camping facilities and area for RV's and such, but i recomend checking out local motels, most are cheap.  There is a fee for hunting, usually not more then $100 deopending on what your hunting and usually the camp fee is waived for the hunt weekend.  Some locations work on assigend compartment area, where others like Aransas Wildlife Refuge allow you to scout and mark a location to hunt.  Some allow ATV's I would say that alot dont, once again you can get a book that shows all the units and restrictions such as ATV units allowed or not allowed, hope this info helps.  I will tell you to at least give it a try for more then one species and get your moneys worth that way!!!
