Summary: Duck season is over for me, as I am in Las Vegas for the SHOT Show all next week. I had a decent season, although I believe all the water we had made the ducks less concentrated than normal. I made the best of it and made some good shots, and watched my dog make some really good retrieves. Can't ...
Force FetchSummary:
Force fetching comes into play when your dog is tired and retrieving starts to become work instead of fun. This is especially true when the weather is warm. I force fetched my dog for that very reason. You have to be real careful, and have a good feeling for how much pressure your dog can handle. I use "Training the Hunting Retriever" by Jerome B. Snake Avoidance TrainingSummary:
One of my best friends lost his lab to a rattlesnake year before last. He went into some palmetto bushes (my friend lives in south Georgia) to retrieve a dove, and a rattlesnake got him right in the neck. My brother lost his German Shorthair about 5 years ago. The dog fell into an old well that had not been covered. He was probably looking for water. I was hunting pheasants during the openener (3rd weekend in Oct.) about 4 years ago, and a friend of mine had to quit hunting because both his labs went down with heatstroke.

I found her at the pound, but it was hard to locate her, as they logged her in as a lab, and I was looking for a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. That is a lot...
Nothing better than OJT for Dog Training!!
Summary: I hunted ducks yesterday, and had an excellent opportunity to work with my Chesapeak Bay Retreiver, Laverne, on crippled/wounded ducks. As most of you know, wounded ducks will dive on a dog that swims out to retrieve. This can cause confusion with a dog, and experience is the best way I have found ...
