Summary:

Hardy,

He should only be charged for the 10 deer and in their current condition when the fence is installed, and no other charges for future deer that maybe reproduced from these 10. Once he pays for them they are his. That money can be utilized for maybe for removing 10 deer from another area (This can also be a credit to land owners) that have an over abundance of animals and relocate them where they can be used to improve genetics on other tracts of land. Say the forests, parks, WMA's, or any free range MLDs tracts.

As to the pricing, the state can simply average the costs outfitters charges for the following: per doe, per management buck, per spike, and per trophy buck. The trophy deer go by per inch in most places while the rest are priced into an all-inclusive package. I'm thinking these animals "value" will have to be priced separately in hunting packages.

Ideally, I would like to see facilities (privately run in cooperation with state biologist and with a goal for long term deer population and quality improvement) for the maintenance/rehabilitation of deer populations in the different geographical regions of Texas. The deer can be transplanted within each region because they are able to survive in the environment they are raised in such as the post oak Savannah, gulf coast, south Texas, west Texas, piney woods, and north Texas. This would be kind of similar to the fishery program that the state utilizes.

SHNF hunting Doe

Summary:

FYI a lot of 149 is now burned.

how is the season going

Summary:

I have seen deer every time I have been out. I finally got a shot yesterday and drilled a good doe. We found my buddies sight has slid down his string. That was why we could not recover his deer.  His arrow had alot of blood but also some stomach contents on it so we let the deer be until today. We made the adjustment and we are ready to go again. The deer movement has been unbelievable in the forest this year. We were out today to try to recover the deer shot yesterday and have trails that are bare dirt and it must be over 100 scrapes. With seeing about 30 yesterday, I'm really looking forward to seeing a good buck this year. I will just need to put my time in. I have this next week off and I will take full advantage of it.

Good hunting to all, and to all a good buck.

Did anyone have any luck in the public land.

Summary:

I saw a dozen or so Saturday. I had a doe parked about 9 yards from me while all the others were feeding past her. There was 1 good heavy buck with them so I just let them feed on buy. I prefer just 1 or 2 animals coming by at a time. I did not want to spook all those deer.

We saw 2 Sunday at 20 yards but no shot presented itself. I'll be back this weekend. The guy who was where I wanted to hunt Saturday killed a doe. Lack of rain has got the pigs out of the area I have been seeing them in.

BROADHEAD OF CHOICE?

Summary:

Kevin,

I just shot my first deer with a rage 2 blade this morning. I'm impressed with it. It truley does leave a 2" entry hole. The big doe went 40 yards and collapsed. I will be using it again tomorrow. The blade went thru 2 ribs on the entry and made complete pass thru. The locking on them is unique. The blade operate on a slip bacis. Only pressure on the front part of the blade will deploy the blades. They simply fold and lock in place. It's so simple. I'll add pictures here in the public land forum shortly.

Sam Houston NF

Summary:

We have killed 2 during bow season. Mine was a doe so I can be picky during general season. I have been watching a lot of deer each trip. Only seen small bucks so far. We try to leave them alone until they get another year on them.

I can say stay in transitions zones. That is where you have several types of trees and terrain that come together. For example, old growth and younger growth where one is much thicker than the other. Maybe between 2 hills with a draw and creek between them. The food sources that are open the deer will use typically after dark. Find where they enter and leave and set-up on those trails. They will follow the edge of the transitions 9 times out of 10. The doe stay in a smaller core area the bucks will come in search of the does. Time and patience are what is required. Drive around early in the morning on Saturday and see where people are NOT hunting then check those areas. By checking I mean go in and set-up and hunt. Watch what the deer do and adjust for Sunday. Good luck!

Are you going to get it out of your system?

Summary:

I'll let it fly on a doe that does not still have a fawn. I can take 2 this year allowing me to hold out for another really good buck. I think the does are harder to get than the bucks once in bow range. They are so alert!

Good luck to all this weekend,

Tim
