Summary:
This is the motely crew that hunted together, myself on the far left and my 2 cousins. The weather was great during the 3rd week of October. Mornings in the low 20's, heavy front and we even had snow showers. We didn't get anything, only saw small bucks, a fork horn and a small six...saw lots of doe and lots of turkey every single day. Check out this deerSummary:
rwg, this deer was harvest in Lehigh County PA, those areas aren't the best for supplemental feeding, use to do alot of coal mining/strip mining in those area. The main thing in PA is that you can't put out a corn feeder except in designated areas and most of those are close to metro areas where they want to cut down on the deer population. In PA everyone, resident and non-resident must put in to be draw for a doe license, wasn't that way when I use to live up there but the state found another way to make more money. I can't wait to get up there for the week of October 20th for the early muzzleloader season with archery season still going. With the doe permit I can harvest a doe with the muzzleloader and a buck with bow only, best part is they modified their law to allow archery hunters with doe permits to carry both weapons into the woods. Pennsylvania BuckSummary:
wohalliburton, you're correct about the issues with the PGC...the hunters are getting really upset with them because they all feel the deer numbers are down because of the allocations in doe permits...every Wildlife Management Unit allocates a specific number of permits that are issued via a drawing in August every year. In the unit I hunt WMU4C they've allocated 39,000 the past 2 years...I've noticed a drop deer sightings but the deer I have seen are bigger and healthier looking because the over browsing that was happening because of too many deer has declined because the PGC is managing the herd better. Other areas around PA are still heavy with deer and the PGC is still issuing significantly more then the 39,000 WMU4C does...I just hope the PGC is very careful and doesn't allow too many doe to be taken. Besides the doe tag drawing the have antler restricts by region. Some areas require at least 3 points to one side, others are 4 point to one side. But again, the body and rack sizes are definitely improving. No matter what happens, I'll be back up there again next October, already setting up plans with my hunting buddies in Georgia and Maryland for the trip. Central Texas RutSummary: Spoke to one of the game wardens today at Caddo NGL....they said several hunters had told them that they've been seeing the bucks running the does up there...I saw a nice shooter 8 or 10 there this afternoon around 3:30, he was with a young doe, couldn't get a clear shot for all the brush he was hanging back in.
Black powder bluesSummary:
Could be worse guys. Pennsylvania has an early season that takes place the 3rd week in October (the same time as Archery season). It is doe only by permit that you have to apply for in a drawing, it selected you pay for the extra license (doe) as well as your muzzleoader license. Doesn't bother me either way I'm gonna be there cuase it's a good deal. $101.50 for the regular hunting license. $26.00 for the archery license. $26.00 for the muzzleloader license.$26.00 for the doe permit. Best part of the whole deal is that I can carry both my bow and my muzzleloader into the woods. Muzzleloader for doe ONLY, bow for buck or doe. Looking forward to it. Know the weather's gonna be cooler. They've had some mid 40's a night lately, my kind of weather. Group Hunt this year???Summary: Gman
Went to Aquilla WMA for an afternoon hunt with full intentions on taking some of our fine feathered friends, only saw two flying in the distance, didn't fire a shot.
The trip was not a waste though, checked out the area I found late last year, it has really good possibilities. Found several trees with either wild grapes or persimmons on them, full to overflowing, they're on the fringes and out on an overgrown field.
While I was walking the perimeter of the overgrown field, managed to kick out a doe with her yearling, there was another one in the thicket just off the field that I couldn't get a look at but the bugger was snorting and carrying on to high heaven.
No many big trees around the perimeter to hang a stand on...could use a ground blind or maybe a ladder stand. This area looks pretty good though, torn up pretty good around the area of those fruited trees....just some food for thought.
