Summary:
Just returned home from my 2nd trip to the Edmund Tom Ranch. My son shot a trophy Javalina within 10 minutes of arrival. The next morning he shot a nice 8 point buck in the free roam area with an 18.5 inch outside spread. A full moon and fog slowed us down the next day and a half, but as soon as the weather cleared we got shots at wild hogs and a doe. We saw lots, I mean lots of game. If your thinking about a trip to south texas to hunt, then the Edmund Tom Ranch is the place to go. The people, accomodations, meals everything is just great. They are everything they say they are and more. I will surely be returning next year. If you have questions feel free to email me then I'll give you my phone number and we can talk. I can go on all day about hunting especially in Texas at the ETOM Ranch. Written by: Paul Siefke, paulsiefke@yahoo.com Raggedy Creek Ranch - Exotic Game Hunts
Summary:
Problems from the outset. I booked this hunt with two friends and my father. We initiated the booking in December of 2007 and January of 2008. The dates we needed were the weekend after thanksgiving. The problem was that the outfitter did not express the fact of the ranch being closed on Thanksgiving. Nor did he realize the dates that we requested were on that weekend. To his credit he did make arrangements for us to hunt after I informed him that some of us had already booked flights and it was those dates or return our money. One problem in the hunt was that my father has MS and is hit or miss on a weekly basis. Rusty was made aware of this in the early fall months ahead of the hunt. At the time he told me to let him know and if my father could not make it he would roll the deposit into my hunt or allow me to use it for other purposes. The week before the hunt my father ended up going into the hospital for tests and was not up to hunting. I called Rusty and informed him of this two days before our hunt. He stated that he could not give me that money back and would have allowed me to use it if he had more notice so he could fill the other spot. I have two problems with that. One, he had already told me he would as I had informed him of the possibility long in advance. Two, the ranch was supposed to be closed that weekend, who would he have gotten to fill in? So I ate the extra half a cost of hunting with him. After arrival we were greeted and Rusty explained what he counts as a point as his whitetail hunts are 8 or 9 points only and an extra fee of $1000 is assessed for anything over that count. Rusty explained that extra points off of a main point count, broken tines count and even a broken beam will be counted as a mirror of the opposite side. After we had booked, the website had been changed to read 8 or 9 point only. We were under the impression that if no deer meeting this criteria were seen a smaller buck could be taken. We were mistaken there also. Any buck under 8 shot points also had a fee assessed. $1000 in fact. The same fee for shooting a larger buck. No where on the website is that stated. All of these things set aside, we were convinced it would be a good hunt. So we headed off to the bunk house Rusty has on his website. But the guide was instructed to take us to the Crowell Guest House. Cozy, clean and two showers. But not the bunk house advertised and paid for. Not complete with a lake where catch and release fishing could be had. In fact Rusty had his family in town for the holidays. They stayed in the lodge that I had paid for. Also during the hunt, family members brought in an assortment of whitetail bucks. Some in the right categories we were imposed upon, some not. But hey, they are family. Onto the hunting. Rusty leases a large chunk of a working cattle ranch. The five stands that were made available to use were metal tower stands with metal siding. Not too bad. Feeders were all functional and full. Cattle were seen underneath almost every feeder every day. I personally witnessed cattle run smaller bucks out from under the feeders three times. When the trophy animals were not showing up, our guide decided to take us out for some hog hunts. The area he had located had some hog traps placed by someone else. We located the culprit. It turned out to be the ranch manager. When our guide informed Rusty he talked to the ranch manager about it as the land had indeed been leased for our hunting. In the end Rusty told our guide to stay out of the area. We did not get to hunt hog in the only area showing sign. It all ended up that each of us took a doe, one hunter saw an eight point that barely qualified and shot him, we were able to stalk up three hogs (due only to the vast capabilities of the guide, which he was later reprimanded for) and two of us got turkeys. All in all this was a very expensive hunt for me to take a small hog, a small doe and two turkeys. I will not be back. The guide Josh Sharp was top notch and I will hunt with him again as soon as I can. Hunting Lease
Summary:
My wife and I were the 5th members to join this lease in May 0f 2008. The fee's and cost that were quoted to us in the paperwork we signed never changed. We knew what we were getting and what the total cost would be. Hunterdan, whoever he is because I can't remember anyone named Dan at the lease, but he was right about the doe hunt the first 2 weeks of the season but neglected to mention that whoever brought in the most would receive a free membership for the next year along with whoever brought in the biggest buck during the season. Sure, food plots are alot of hard work, but I have seen the results by what have been harvested. I also have great game cam pics of deer that I have never seen while sitting in my blind. Guess that's why we call it hunting. I have hunted many leases in the past 45 years and this is one of the best family leases I have seen. Any given weekend you can see kid's running around having a good time and hunting with their parents. The only time I think a fine would be imposed is if you didn't renew and pulled out and left a big mess for someone else to clean up. I think that is only right.I would recommend this lease and will continue to renew as long as they will have me. S&W outfitters

Summary: I would like to see all three species of wild cats the Jaguar, Ocelot, and Margay (reintroduced) to Texas and surrounding states where the habitat is appropriate. I am a white tailed deer hunter and am truly in awe of predators when I see them while hiking or hunting. I would love to have the opportunity to see these three native tropical cats in the states. To be be in a deer stand and witness one of these cats basking on a limb or stalking prey would just complete the hunting experience.
Two years ago I traveled to Central America for 11 days in the hope to catch a glimpse of one of our 6 native cats but only saw foot prints and two scratched/marked tree trunks. This trip cost me 5k and while it was a beautiful trip it would cost much less to try and see the cats here in the states where they used to be. Habitat fragmentation and or destruction is one problem but I believe and hate to say that the biggest hurdle we have to jump concerning reintroduction of wild predators in area in the states is education, especially with my fellow hunters. Predators like Bear, Wolf, Coyotes, Fox or Feline species do occassionally take strong healthy animals but more frequently prey on very young, old, weak, sick or injured animals. This is a huge benefit to any ecosystem as well as to the hunters within that ecosystem. One often hears that risk of predators eating up all the game animals. I will have to be honest with you in my area there 20 deer per square mile and that is way too many. I would be thrilled to walk outside and see a Couger or Jaguar take down a mature doe. We certainly need more predators in the states. We humans have the tendacy to think we are the only ones that should be allowed to take game animals. Where is the balance???? The wild tropical cats are truly magnificent animals and I vote to reintroduce them where appropriate and when the education is under way.
I HAVE NEVER FELT SO ALIVE An American we met in Corcovado National Park, Costa Rica was backpacking across the park (a 4 day trip). He said that one night he got up to relieve himself and heard something. When he turned his flash light his stream suddenly stopped as two green glowing eyes of a Jaguar was watching him from about 50' away. I asked him what it was like to be standing away from tent with his unit hanging out while a Jaguar watched and he said that 'HE HAD NEVER FELT MORE ALIVE THAN HE DID AT THAT MOMENT' He said it made a deep grouling rumble a walked off. These are stories you one hears about back country jungle experiences form the people lucky enough to encounter this awsome creature. Jim Rodgers Concerning exotic cats including all native American cats such as the cougar, jaguar, Oncilla, Ocelot, Margay, Jaguarundi, and Goeffery's Cat as well as or animal species around the globe there is no better way to assure the total survival of a species than to keep the pure freedom this country was founded on alive and let the public citizens with an serious desire to keep said species in captivity. The breeding programs that were developed in the 50's, 60's, 70's and early 80's thrived and proved that many of the rare species would breed well in captivity. The imperial government with all it's wisdom?????? killed all private captive endavors decided that it new better how to save the various species. The private research, specific husbandry, dietary and housing needs and breeding of wild animals in the states has suffered serious decline because of government regulations. This in turn killed the ability for such interested citizens from achieving their full potential and dreams of discovering all of the Feline needs. Successful Margay, oncilla and Ocelots and domestic house cats were bred to create a lovely tabby cat personality that had a wild tropical patterned coat. The true intent was to take the pressure off of the wild populations from the pet trade. But all that was stopped with most of the tropical cats dying out in the states because most only live to 15 - 20 years. This leaves us with only a handful of zoos with any collections of wild cats and very little effort to breed them for future release or for the hybridzing for the pet trade because now it tis illegal.I do agree that habitat must be saved and education plays a very important part of the conservation of Americas wild cats. This are are in agreement on. The one thing that disturbs me most is the people that do not think out side of the box on an issue. Captive breeding programs benefits most all species equally as well as saving habitat. Much knowledge was gain during the early years of captive husbandry and breeding of especially the small Central and South American wild cats. Success were becoming common place for the interested parties with certain species that put together great facilities to house in a stimulating way these inquisitive wild cats happy in captivity. This provided extra animals to turn loose with habitat was secured as well as it took to stress of the wild populations for the pet trade ( People with a true commitment to house and keep healthy such a fun, energetic, rambunctious, warm and cuddly cat should have the free right to their choice of endeavors. That is what this country was founded on! Government in it's infinite knowledge discourages the general public from use their creative and observant minds from participating in the equally important part of conservation. There is always someone with a better understanding and more effective way do do something if you allow them to participate. I see that most people that consider themselves conservationists can't wait until government takes over every aspect of one life and mind and puts us to work as brain dead worker bees. My boyfriend has been hunting private land in Fayetteville for 15 years now. He has noticed a nice increase in quality deer due to antler restrictions. I think we only saw one spike the whole season and we were out there every weekend. We didn't get a shoot off cause my boyfriend says to me look there is a doe get the binoculars. When I looked I said to him that doe has horns lol. By that time he was almost into the woods. Why Wind One Day, Can Bring Success the Next
Summary:
That makes sense! My wife and I went out for opening weekend (in TX) this last weekend. On Saturday morning all the way until mid afternoon, the winds were a howlin', but they started to die down about 4-5 pm, and she had 4 does and 3 young bucks come out (I didn't see any from my treestand). She harvested a nice big doe. The next morning there was almost no wind, and bucks were coming out early. I ended up shooting a nice buck (last picture posted "Buck" by gtcarman.
