Sort your results:Existing Search Criteria:Refine Your Search:Search Results:Ranch on Saturday 7-16Summary: That is a real bummer Budd. Hunting the Public land is not a curse and you will kill deer if you put in the time. There are tons of public hunting areas that allow you to hunt all seasons. I dont have a lease either this year and we will be hunting the forest most of the time. I am blessed with friends that have land and my grandmother has property that I get to hunt but I spend more time on public lands than any other. Depending on how the deer population looks at the ranch, maybe I will be able to take a couple people on some bow hunts for doe. I'm going back to see how things look around the feeders we put out a few weeks ago.
Options near San AntonioSummary: I have never hunted the SHNF but I do hunt the Davy Crockett National Forest and a couple of the TPWD WMA areas. I have hunted Aquilla WMA and saw both bucks and doe. If you dont want to spend a ton of money and you don't have friends with land, public land will be your only other option. I can give you some pointers and leads on where to hunt if you go to DCNF or Aquilla. You will have plenty of public land around SA for some dove and waterfoul hunting if you get the Public Hunting Permit from TPWD. If you have questions let me know.
Hogs in Centerville?Summary: I've seen some deer between 140 and 150 out of the DCNF but they are few and far between. My best is a 120 class 8pt and my buddy shot a P&Y 8pt that went 126. About 5 years ago I saw a 140 class buck during bow season but did not get a shot. My brother and our buddy saw what they said was a 150 class buck chasing a doe the day before season opener but we never caught a glimps of him during the season.
i really got oneSummary:
Great job Dave. I took my daughter out on Sat evening for her first deer hunt. We got in the blind at about 3:45 and all we saw were dove at the feeder for hours. At about 5:30 I looked way out into the field we were hunting and there were 3 doe crossing about 175 yards out. I showed them to Autumn and said plug your ears. I let the lead fly and watched the doe tumble and then get up. I reloaded and started tracking the doe across the field when I saw the blood on her side and she dropped after about 75yards. I was supprised when my daughter watched the entire field dressing process without a hitch. Autumn said she can't wait until next year so she can shoot her own deer. Gman, any luck yet?Summary: Hey guys, thanks for the condolences. Well, I finally got her moved out of the house this past weekend so now hunting season really opens. All those mounts will find a nice wall in the house instead of the garage. Now that the house is all mine I have to pack the freezer to afford to keep the darn thing. The best thing of all is that I have primary residence for my daughter so I can teach her all about the outdoors. I will be back after those big bucks this weekend and any doe or hog that happens by my stand. I also got some good news in the mail this morning, my doe permit for the National Forest came in and I'm fired up. I hope to get some good hunting in because I have 9 days off in Nov. and 9 days off in Dec. so keep watch and maybe we can make a trip to the National Forest. I got some good spots I can so a couple people and maybe get a buck or two. Good luck with the rest of the season guys and lets do a duck hunt in Dec. or Jan. out at the ranch. Check out these pics my brother got yesterday down the street from my house. These bucks were chasing a doe all over the pasture.
Reports??Summary: We got the rain out in Burnet also, 5" to be more spacific. I got to the lease on Friday evening at 8:45 and it started raining. The rain did not stop until 11:00am on Saturday. I hunted Sat. evening and saw 8 doe and got a long shot at one under the feeder but I hit the feeder leg. I should have gotten a pic of the arrow sticking out of the 2" steel pipe feeder leg so you guys would believe me. I will have a pic of the arrow soon. Sunday I started the morning in a stand at the front of the property. Things were good until the landowners dogs showed up and milled around for 20 min. The dogs caught site of a doe and took off so I took that oppertunity to haul butt to another stand. I saw a doe as I approched the stand but could not get a shot. I got into the stand at 10 mins. until 8 and while I was getting setup a nice 8pt came to the feeder but he was not quite what I was looking for so I let him walk. Just a few minutes later I heard something behind me and turned to see 2 doe coming into the feeder. They got down wind of me and changed directions headed back where they came from which would take them directly into one of my shooting lanes at 25 yards. I came to full draw and when the doe stopped in the shooting lane I lined up the site and touched the trigger on my release. Thwack! I watched the arrow nail the doe in the chest. I watched her run off and listened and heard her caugh so I knew she was done. I gave her 30 minutes and started the tracking job which lead maybe 80 to 100 yards to the doe. It was great to finally get a deer again with the bow, it had been 3 years sense my last deer bow kill. I will have a pic soon, just have not had time to download. On a good note, one of my buddies on the lease saw an 8pt that was pushing the 150 inch mark so I will be back after him next weekend.
ready to goSummary: I started using one of the small rattle boxes last year and had more successful rattleing than ever before. I rattled in 3 bucks last year and my brother used it and rattled in a 140 class buck, unfortunately he did not get a shot. I use the rattle box in conjunction with a grunt tube and the Can doe in heat call. I start by making 3 to 5 bleats with the can then add in the grunt tube. I will try to make the sounds of a buck chasing a doe with the grunt tube. Then I add in a couple more doe bleats and start making aggressive grunts with the tube. I use my feet to make ground noise and then I start using the rattle box. I will rattle for a minute or two and keep watch for any kind of movement. When I quit with the rattle box I start using the Can doe bleat again and make tending grunts. Then I sit and watch. The entire sequence takes maybe 5 to 7 minutes but seems to work really well.
