It started with a bad note during bow season. I put an arrow right thru the pumphouse of the best buck I saw all year. Something or someone got that deer before I did. We went on to kill 3 bucks and a doe. 2 bucks and a doe come from SHNF. We did see alot of deer this year. We did not hunt very hard, 6 days of bow season (private land) and 2 days of general season in the national forest.
Sam Houston National Forest
Summary:
Draw a line from New Waverly to Huntsville and go east of 75. This area is holding a good number of deer. They don't have a great quality but the numbers are there. We got 2 just before Christmas. I had to use my doe tag and my buddy got his buck. We shot these deer 10 minutes apart and had some work to do getting them out. The forest was kind to us giving up 3 deer this year. EVERYONE HUNTING PUBLIC LANDSummary: The journal idea here is great. However some things are better kept closer to the vest. Keep you old map books. Log the deer you see, the dates, the cover, the sex etc. I will log 1B9-20 at 10A and draw an arrow from the list on the page to the location. I may have 6D8-30 at 8P for 6 doe August 30th...
FYI - Statistics from the field are dishearteningSummary:
Hunting public land is a challenge. I would love to see MORE of the antler restrictions used in some Texas counties on Type II land. Let the youth and bow hunters have a lesser restriction during their seasons and press for a or encourage a larger doe harvest. I would love to see 3.5 and 4.5 yaer old deer in the forests!
Sam Houston National Forest Opening Weekend-How was it?Summary: I had great deer movement Saturday morning. 5 bucks, 1 doe and 1 unknown. (bucks were a spike, a 4, a 6, an 8, and a 7) The unknown was too dark to see clearly. All deer were seen by 11:15am. Shot what I thought to be an 8 but was a 7 pointer. Took it to the check station and got a doe permit. Thes...
Grunt calling?Summary:
I use a loud repetative grunt. Like it's in cadence with the steps of a domonant buck coming through the woods. If you have ever heard this it's great to duplicate. It sounds to me like they are telling everyone to get the heck out of their way. I may blow 20-30 times and turn me head from one side slowly to the other. When I get there I stop. I use it when I hear bucks fighting or just after the fight, or see one with its head down and moving. They come to attention and move in for a close look. If I hear a doe bleet, I use just give one or two quiet contact grunts to make them feel secure. I use it only during late bow season to about Thanksgiving. It gets put away after that. Hunting becomes very quiet after that. So...how many hunter helped to reduce the deer population?Summary:
I was in SHNF saw 5 bucks and a doe by 11:20 Saturday morning. Did not get a round seated well for the 1st 8 pointer. He was about 15" wide and 8" tall. Good enough for me. The gun went click and "there he was , gone." Took what I thought was another 8 but was a 7 pointer. He went about 10' and down. He was just a couple of steps from the bike and cart. Went to the check station and got a doe permit. I'll be back in the woods soon. FYI on opening morning go to the check stations. They are handing out doe permits to all hunters. You don't need to draw one. < Previous Page 34 results found Next Page >Showing results 11 through 20
