So...how many hunter helped to reduce the deer population?

Summary:

I didn't score at Caddo NGL...saw a mama and her twin fawns (@30lbs each). Did have my USFS doe permit (came today) so I didn't take anything, they were the only 3 deer I saw all day Saturday.

Ugly deer

Ugly deer
Summary: Strange looking younster...the way he has his ears laid back is very odd unless the doe there has him ticked off

National Forest Doe Permits

Summary:

Good luck Chris...both my oldest son (Air Force) and I put in for doe permits for Caddo National Grasslands, for the second time he got one and the ole' man didn't but that's okay with me at least we'll be out there hunting together for the first time in many years....hope everybody gets the deer of their dreams this year.

Off on my Pennsylvania Archery Hunt

Summary: Well, the hunt is over...didn't get one but had a great time anyway. Started the hunt of Monday the 16th saw two doe the whole day both well out of range. Saw a jake and one nice tom with about an 11" beard and the reddest head I've ever seen on an Eastern Turkey. Tuesday dawned dark and gloomy had a light rain to start the day. At 7:50am I saw movement at the edge of a thicket, turned out to be a buck....I looked this guy over real good, he had the darkest coat I've seen on a deer in years but the thing that real set him off was the ivory tips of his antlers. At first I thought he was a 4 point that my In-law had been seeing but as he got closer he had at least 8 points and some trash around the base of his antlers. Had him anywhere from 28 to 17 yards but didn't take the shot because he was "birddogging"..his nose what tight to the ground and he was covering an erratic path, couldn't get him to stop no matter what I tried. Funny this about this deer was that I honestly feel he was only about 1 1/2 years old and no older. His face looked like a young doe, he had no belly whatsoever, his muscle density was just developing and when he turned his flank to me he had very narrow hips. I didn't want to take a shot at him while he was walking too much can go wrong. He was too magnificient an animal to take the chance of making a bad hit. If they don't get him during the remainder of the 2 week early muzzleloader season that still has a little over a week to go along with archery season he'll be prime pickings during the firearms season that opens the Monday after Thanksgiving and runs for 2 weeks. I'm hoping he makes it through all of this because he'll be even better next season when I plan to go back. All in all I had a fantastic trip, saw alot of deer (mostly doe) and more turkey then I could keep track of on a daily basis. Was a memory to remember.

Her First Bow Kill

Her First Bow Kill
Summary: Nice doe...congrats to you both...a great shared experience

Are you going to get it out of your system?

Summary: Hunting Corps of Engineers land so I'll take any big fat doe that comes along...unless a big buck happens by first....meat for the freezer either way.

Where is everybody?

Summary: Now after our meals on wings....shooting the bow everyday...getting ready for the opener here then 2 weeks after that off to Pennsylvania for 10 days of bowhunting....was even lucky enough to draw a doe tag to go along with the buck tag

Here are a couple pics from the trail cam.

Here are a couple pics from the trail cam.
Summary: Super pics Gman.  That buck's a beauty...looks like the doe numbers may need to be thinned down just a tick. Hope you have a great season.

Natinal Forest

Summary:

Bob,

No food plots around the grasslands and it's hard to find neighboring property that has anything of interest to the deer planted either. Ohio, oh yeah, now you're talking, love those big deer.  I had went back to Pennsylvania the second week in October, rained everyday and didn't see many deer. Saw a black bear, a bobcat, more squirrels and chipmunks then you can shake a stick at...2 huge flock of turkeys...but only had two doe feeding in but wouldn't come out from behind the trees at 28 yards. Was good to go back to the old home state, hadn't hunted there in 4 years. Oklahoma sounds like a winner for ya....I wish you luck.  If I make plans to go to Caddo in December I'll let ya know and maybe we can hook up for a hunt.

Saturday

Summary:

Sorry I didn't see you at Aquilla Marvin.  My buddy and I were there all weekend. On Saturday he missed a big doe with his ML then in the evening around 5:10pm he had a huge buck come in, somehow he managed to miss him too. At 10:00am Sunday morning I did a slow walking one man drive to him and this time he connected on a running (double lung) doe at about 50 yards. That .50 cal PowerBelt 295 grain slug went completely through, she went about 40 yards and piled up...if you could have seen the blood trail you'd have thought somebody went through the woods and had dumped a bucket of paint. All told he had seen 9 deer in less then 2 days, I saw one but couldn't get a clear shot. May be going back out there next weekend if the temp will drop even a few degrees.
