Age and Score??

Age and Score??
Summary:

Arobie120, You've hit the nail on the head! Meat first. We grew up on deer meat & didn't matter to Dad if it had horns or not. It only mattered that He put more food on the table. Things have changed much over the years & that all good also. We still take a doe or 2 before we hunt the horns! Good luck to you Sir, may your table be plentiful & your glass be full.

IT's OK TO SAY "MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!"

Just a thought!

Summary:

Thats fine in all, but it seems like the ones that say they are for the hunt are the ones that dont see much. If i have 15 deer come out everytime i hunt, what would be the sport of killing this first thing that walked out and shorting my season. I would rather be selective and hunt longer and enjoy the outdoors more. Plus if you can take a doe for meat why would you shoot small bucks. Again it goes back to where you hunt and what you see. For the guy that sees 4 deer all year, hell yeah size doesnt matter, but dont judge the people that hunt good leases.

Panhandle bucks=broken tines?

Panhandle bucks=broken tines?
Summary:

I manage 18,000 acres low fence in the panhandle and have watched it for the last five years  for 1 broke antlers means there is competiveness for does meaning close buck to doe ratioes. 2 do not knowe if it makes a difference but when 180 to 225lb bucks hit together something has to give like antlers. They are alot bigger in this part of the state but If your in an area where fighting rarely occures it is propably do to a buck to doe ratio out of wack. We have had abundant rainfall this year plus protein but still broken antlers. We see this every year. I would say 70% have something broke right now in the last two weeks. We do have mass and still the same result heavy competition for ladies.

Not Hungry?

Summary:

rut might be on in your area, if that's the case the deer won't be coming to your feeder anyway unless they smell a hot doe. The Rut is in full swing in Crockett county, my uncle has been hunting all week and hasn't seen nothing but spikes and does. We have alot of acorns on our lease but the deer are still tearing up the corn

SHNF 2010 Update

Summary:

dont forget about muzzle loader season!!!!! friday evening had a doe come zooming by at 30 yards, tried to get on her but it was too thick.then i looked back and there was another one standing there so i moved to get on it and saw that it had horns coulndt tell what all it had, to small anyway. may have seen a spike on one side??? but already have my buck. so, anyway about 2 minutes later these 3 dogs come out in the same place. i was maaaddddddd. they all three had the same red collar on so i let them all walk off. i thought someone may have been out just walking aroundwith their dogs. but right at dark,( there was a guy hunting down the road where i wanted to hunt but let him have it to his self and went 1/2 mile down)he cut loose with 2 shots and i heard one off the dogs yelping, so he didnt let them just walk off, (good man in my opinion)

isnt there a leash law for dogs in the forrest?????

Looking for someone to go hunting with?

Summary:

Sam Houston National Forrest is only an hour or so from the Houston area and is around 160,000. If you don't mind walking a little to get back in the woods a ways, there are some swamp donkeys living in there!! North of Lake Conroe is where I would be trying to spend some time if I were to hunt there. Walker, San Jacinto and Montgomery Cos. have a January(January 3-16, 2011) muzzleloader season as well. A lot of SHNF is in those cos. SHNF takes a state park permit($48) to hunt it....permit only for doe. Hope you find something........Here is a map of SHNF areas.....

SOUTH TX RUT STARTING EARLY

Summary:

I saw a nice buck following behind a doe last weekend inside a fenced in enclosure (inside town of course). I could only assume she was coming into heat. That's here in San Antonio, so maybe they will be chasing sooner that the 2nd week of December. Good luck

Do you need help culling or thinning your doe population?

I see lots of people reading this, but no comments....

Did I miss the Rut in NE Texas?

Summary:

I haven't seen much rut activity in Cass or Bowie counties. Not a lot of scraps or rubs this year. Of course this is on public land where there is more pressure on the deer.Seen a nice buck the 6 of november. He would not respond to any thing I did to make him stop and look at me. He was in "love", following a doe. With the moon waxing, it seems to me the deer are moving at night more. The full moon will be the 21st. After that I hope they will start moving more in daylight hours. The deer followed this same pattern in october.According to Field & Stream the 21st. is The Day. IMO the rut is slowing down to where the deer arent "crazy". Im starting to get groups of does on cameras again.Good Luck.
