Summary: We have NOT had any rain, so all I can credit is the 3rd year of full-time protein feeding (record rack), shooting lots of does, and not harvesting a buck in recent years. There is a mix of wide 8 point genetics and tall 10 point genetics. If I am lucky, the female offspring of one to mate with t...
negative impact of feeding deerSummary:
rwg15, Although I disagree with your comments and conclusions, we here at TexasHuntFish.com want our forum to entertain the full spectrum of opinions. Your more recent posts have departed from an attempt to express an unpopular opinion, and become non-educational, non-informative "jabs" for lack of a better word. Respected members of our forum have also responded with comments that do not contribute to the eduational value of this thread. As a result, with an effort to honor people's opinions, we have deleted a number of comments from a number of members in this thread. IF YOU DON'T HAVE SOMETHING INFORMATIVE TO SAY, PLEASE DON'T RESPOND WITH PERSONAL ATTACKS THAT ADD NO VALUE. Couple of points I wanted to make: In Texas, the landowner does NOT own the wildlife on the land. The industry of Deer Farming did not start in Texas and is not unique to Texas. People profit from wildlife in many ways more than hunting. Animal Planet, National Geographic, and every grocery and pet store that sells wild bird seed. Where do you draw the line? I can't tell what you stand for? If I don't hunt over a feeder, but I set up my bow blind in the forest where all the oak trees are clustered, knowing that this greatly increases my chances of seeing a deer, am I cheating in your eyes? If I spend 40 hours scouting before season and set up my bow blind at the only permanent water hole for a square mile in west or south texas, knowing that all of the wildlife will be coming to the water, am I cheating? When deer hunting, if I use a compound bow versus a recurve bow, am I cheating? If I use a crossbow instead of a compound bow, am I cheating? If I use a pistol instead of a crossbow, am I cheating? If I use a .12Ga slug instead of a pistol, am I cheating? If I use an open sight 30-30 instead of a shotgun am I cheating? If I use a 300 win mag with a 20x scope am I cheating? Where is the line? What defines cheating? If I hunt on a 75,000 ranch that is high-fenced, am I cheating? It takes about 6 hours to drive the fence line of this ranch in Maverick County. Yes, it is high-fenced because of poachers, illegal immigrants, and to contain their significant investment in managing their deer over the last 20 years. At what size ranch does high fence make it cheating in your opinion? Do you think anyone on this forum supports a deer breeder releasing a 200 class buck into a 50 acre high fence enclosure for some city slicker to come shoot with his 9x scoped .300 win mag while drinking four cold beers? Of course we don't. To summarize, WHAT DO YOU STAND FOR? WHAT ARE YOUR SOLUTIONS? EDUCATE, INFORM, BUT REMEMBER THIS IS A FAMILY FRIENDLY FORUM.
They found out they were losing their lease, so they shot everything they could
Summary: "After over 25 years of Quality Deer Management, they found out that they were losing their lease. There was only one thing to do, GET BUCK WILD!" This photo, and the quote from the sender, brings up a host of different emotions and responses. The perception that after years of quality deer man...

average hunters priced out of hunting
Summary:
Hornhunter, I was talking with Linda Campbell at Texas Parks & Wildlife about the cost of hunting in Texas and she had some great comments about the underutilized the Public Hunting opportunities. Read page 108 in the new Outdoor Annual for 2008-2009. Or, visit http://tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/hunt/public/ I had no idea they gave away 5500+ large game hunts each year; or that there is 55000 acres of walk-in birding hunting near urban areas; or 49 walk-in youth hunting areas, or that they give away 1200+ youth hunts for large game, exotics, and turkey each year. For example, I looked up buck hunts in Travis County and there were only 632 applicants for 18 permits that include 1 buck, 2 does, and unlmited feral hogs. Last year of the 18 hunters, it says 4 harvested a buck. Not bad for a $10 raffle ticket with a 1 in 35 chance of winning. ----------------- Computer Drawings for Supervised Hunts Drawings are held to select a limited number of participants in high quality supervised hunts for white-tailed and mule deer, pronghorn antelope, exotics, feral hogs, javelina, turkey, alligators and guided hunt packages. Application deadlines for the categories of 2008-2009 Computer Drawn Hunts are as follows:
Two bucks caught in mortal combat, found off of HWY 290 in Giddings, Texas
Summary: Two tremendous bucks had been found locked together just West of the bowling alley in Giddings on Hwy 290. They were in a small mesquite pasture. The finder called 911 and was routed to the local Humane Society. Someone came out with a tranquilizer gun, found one deer already dead, stunned the ...
