EXTENDED BATTERY LIFE FOR TRAIL CAMERAS

hunting east texas

Summary:

I lived and hunted in ETX for 8 years and have hunted WTX for the last 12 years.  The big difference between ETX and WTX, at least the places that I've hunted in WTX, is that you can see a whole lot further and that means seeing more deer.  Now, if you can find a big oak bottom in ETX you can see pretty well, but unfortunately there aren't a lot of those around anymore.  Now even in those oak flats I'm talking about 80 yards when in a lot of WTX, especially if you have elevation, its 500+ yards.  Also, generally speaking, most of ETX doesn't have the deer carrying capacity...so combine that with lower visibility and that translates into seeing fewer deer under most circumstances.  Certainly there are some well-managed areas that are the exception, but most of the land I've been on has been at least partially cut over and replanted in pine.  As a result there's just not the food to support as large a population as in many parts of WTX.

Another consequence of all this in ETX is that, again in my opinion, you're going to have to put in your time to know your land a lot better.  Where is the food, what type of acorns drop when and where are those stands of white oak versus pin oak, etc.  In years of big acorn crops they could be any one of about 10 places.  And, while they were at place 'A" one day doesn't mean they'll be there the next.

And, while I generally agree with Tim about the size of WTX bucks there certianly are exceptions.  Mature bucks in some areas out there can go well over 160 pounds (I took one a couple years back), in good years even more than that.  ETX bucks can get over 200 lbs, but in my experience they're not all that common anymore.

Trinity County is a great place to go.  But, like any deer habitat it has to have the right stuff.  In my opinion the vast majority of ETX just doesn't have it anymore.  Its a shame too because at one time there really were some woozers in places like the Trinity, Neches, Sabine, and Red River river bottoms.

Late Season Dove Hunt at Uvalde, lots of pics

Summary:

This is the first time I have ever hunted in Sesame, much less seen it before. My understanding it is planted there as part of a government or university project with several different types for testing and research.
Thus why it is not cut. I had seeds in all my hunting cloths when I got home. I can see why this hunt is such a sure thing every season.

Ok, I am going to stray from the hunt. There is more here than just dove hunting. I got side tracked on the way to the Dove field Sunday morning. On the 20 minute drive from the State Park to the field at dawn, I think I saw more Deer in that 20 minutes than I have seen in the last 5 years. Including some Axis and Blackbuck. I had to stop to get a picture of these two.

On a budget I stayed at Garner State Park rather than in Town. I camped with electric and water for less than 20 bucks. Though next time I am going to take my non hunting family and get one of the State Park Cabins. They could hang out at the park while I am away hunting. This time of year, it was not crowded at all. I had the best site in the entire park I think right on the river.

So many birds I decided to stay for Monday morning. I swear there were more Birds on Monday than on Saturday and Sunday combined.
A nice sunrise.

I hunted in the edge of the Sesame again, but with a Mojo this time behind me just a little ways out in a plowed field. Not a lot of Dove came to the mojo, but the ones that did presented some high success rate shots. With the others flying in my face one after another, I was done by 8:30 in the morning.

A big public thank you to Kevin for his hospitality to everyone on the hunt and to me. Though I have no affiliation and am mostly a public land hunter, I do hope to make a tradition of this one for years to come. Especially for the late season Dove season. Kevin's hunts on the Dove are $85. Kevin can be reached at (936) 537-6759. When he has so many great people coming back from year to year, it shows he is doing something right.

Thanks for the update.I sometimes cut through that area when returning from V.A. appointments in Waco.(Hate Hwy 31 on motorcycle). I will stop and ask around the next time I'm in that area, hopefully soon," bad weather, no rides".I also have rider friend, a driver for Central, who seems to know a lot of folks in Ennis. I'll ask him to see if someone knows a good location. He might even turn up some private land in that area. If I find anything, I'll post a.s.a.p.....Bill

Opinions On Hunting During, Before, Or After The Rut...

Summary:

I also have seen our best bucks during the post rut. Also it seems to make the bucks congrogate around one single doe. I have seen on many ocasions 4-5 bucks trying for one doe. The most I can remember seeing was 11 bucks after one doe, the buck that was "protecting" his property had his work cut out for him.

2010 Spring Turkey hunt

Summary:

I usually just breast them out and cut the fan off.  Wild turkeys generally arent as juciy as the ones in the store.  The breasts, however, are pretty good.
