Wild Hog Hunt

Summary:

Just got back from paul's ranch. We had a great time and saw and shot many hogs. The staff was awsome and the food was great. We saw about 50 hogs a day when walking around, hunting at night we saw a few hogs and it was slow , but alot of fun. varmint hunting is very difficult in general and not recomened at this place. we saw a skunk but did not have enough time to put a good effort into hunting varmints.  The best time to hunt this place at night is from midnight to daylight. We saw a giant hog at night but it would not come into bow range. we shot 6 hogs and all were around 150 pounds. there were 11 people total hunting the ranch at one time which i thought would be way to many but it was just fine. Everyone shot hogs. The only complaints that we had were that they charge to put your meat into a cooler and when they do it is just frozen into a big block. when you have them cut up your hog stand there and put the meat into bags before it go's into the cooler. when they debone your animal they don't do a very good job, the meat is left with dirt and hair on it. Paul? who is this guy? Is he made up? You would think the owner of the ranch would stop and thank a guy for hunting on his ranch, the guy is no where to be found. There are no other ranches like he says there are. There is only one and it is about 320 acers. Other than that it was a great time.

A fast flyer, but not good for eating. The funny looking crew cut head makes them easier to identify and not shoot.

Greetings From Latitude 26

Greetings From Latitude 26
Summary:

It's funny how we first cut down the native brush, and the whitewing just decided they'd nest in the orchards, then we cut down the orchards to make way for urbanization after the big freeze in '83....so the whitewing nesting moved south down around San Fernando....then our demand for mesquite charcoal became so great that they cut down the brush there and the whitewing nesting moved even further south down around Victoria.....Wonder what's next?

On second thought. It's not funny all.

Summary:

We sure did have a good time, sorry you did not find the unit it is a little tricky to locate, the best advice I can give you is if your heading north on 1604 the unit is on the left hand side and you can locate the yellow marker posted near the highway and there is a sign on the gate entering the property.  I have hunted this location several times this year and last.  It can be a great hunt, but unfortunately it does get crowded on the weekends.  If you go there are some nice areas cut and mowed towards the back of the property and in the middle where birds will fly over.  Also, there is a barn or shed in the middle of the property, flocks of whitewings fly over this area also.  I would love to go join you for a hunt, unfortunately I will be busy with my son's select baseball team this weekend and next, then plan to hunt some south zone locations in late sept or even mid october, my goal is to try to make a trip to the Rio Grande Valley for at least one hunt before the season ends, there is alot of whitewings and good flocks of morning dove that fly over the Ebony Unit near Rangerville west of Harligen.

Recomend a good knife for field dressing deer?

Summary:

Tom:

If you are not going to reload those spent .30-30 rounds, I'd like to have them.  I come through Austin usually twice a year (both times during deer season) and would be glad to stop by, meet you and collect any spent brass you have for the .30-30.  I intend to start reloading for the .30-30 after this deer season.

On the PakLite skinner, the only thing I don't like is the curve at the back of the blade near the finger groove.  I can't sharpen it with a flat sharpener, but then again, the pointy end is all I've ever used to skin and cut so it works just fine for me.
