Need somewhere near Austin for first time hog hunter.....

Summary:

Looking to book a boar / feral pig hunt for free if possible. From what I understand these are considered nusiance animals. Call me the cleaner:) I would like to find a ranch/farm who wants some pigs hunted down. Not sure about season, fees for license or anything else but if you don't mind, I'll grab a few respectful, responsible pals and we'll take them off your land/hands.

We live in MN and will drive down, camp or or hotel/motel. We can even feed ourselves, just point us to the pasture or whatever! email me or visit my website to contact me http://www.michaelrswan.com

BTW, if you have a ranch and want to do a trade for marketing / website design services, I'll do you right. I'm a pro. Last one I did is http://www.goiwx.com - check the quality! Thanks in advance!!

Paint Mare Ranch, West Texas

Summary:

I've got tracks 19 & 25 in Paint Mare.

Bill,
I'm offshore, in the Gulf of Mexico, working and don't want to be posting my work number on a forum. Here is my e-mail address, jimcstreet@aol.com. Drop me a note w/ a contact number. I don't know if you've looked at Myers Canyon but it looks like some better tracks left on that ranch. You have to drive through MC to get back to Paint Mare. Drop me a line with a contact number.

Doug,
I saw the picture you posted of the 3 legged deer, what’s up with that? I've seen a lot but that was a first.
I hunted about 4 days at the first of November and saw 1 nice 10 point that never presented a good shot, I was bow hunting that morning. I wound up taking a doe with my bow that trip.
I made my second and final hunt the second week of December. I hunted 5 days that time and only saw a few young bucks, hopefully they made it through the season. The second hunt was very frustration for me as I had a bad chest cold and couldn’t set on a stand without coughing every 15 or 20 minutes. I didn’t shoot anything on this trip.
Most of the shooting you here is coming from down in the canyon south of me, some on Paint Mare but not all.
And yes I did meet the young Wardens in December. They drove right up to my camp on a Saturday after noon. It was only there second year out there and they seem okay. That was the first time I’ve been visited by a GW out there. I know there just trying to do there job the best they can and I respect that but really don’t like the idea of them diving up on my place like it was a public hunting area. People like us that have made large investment and put much effort into having a place of our own aren’t likely to be killing every think that walks on their property. On the same note their presents is good in detouring poachers and regulating the leased land in the area.
My e-mail address is in the note to Bill at top. Drop me a line sometime, maybe one of these days we’ll meet up out there.

Poacher Kill from a nearby ranch

Poacher Kill from a nearby ranch
Summary:

Years ago we'd hunt at the old Sweden ranch south of Freer.  The camp was close to the road, and you could often hear .22s popping late at night.  By the time you got there the perpetrators would be gone with sometimes a headless body or many times (when you could find it) just a bloody spot by the road to show for their 'work'.

Jerks....

Whats in your field kit?

Summary:

Benadryl is a necessary around our camp since one of my sons is allregic to deer dander.

One thing we're sure to pack along a good pair of tweezers with magnifying glass so we can take care of any cactus stickers, as well as pick-off any ticks too.  We've gotten a few on us from field dressing and skinning over the years, epecially before the first good freeze.

Another is bag balm (or equivalent)...after skinning a few deer the hands can get really dry - espeially when its cold.

City Hunters

Summary:

Buzzard,

1.  I do not take paying clients out there, sorry to burst your bubble.  I take a friend or two with me because loading dead hogs and deer by myself is a lot of work.  One is a College Station Police Officer, the other is an accountant and outdoor writer.  My guiding takes place primarily in Brown County, Kerr County and West TX.  There isn't enough room, or deer, out there to take paying hunters.

2.  I've done more to help work that place from building fence, shredding, digging ditches so the horses can get water, replacing gates, replacing the roof on the shed, cutting brush off of the fences, painting, cleaing and other general maintenance, running the tractor, mower, ditch witch,  etc in the last 10 years than anybody else.  I also help supervise Big Event out there every year when we have a day of free labor.  I also have picked up trash left by those he lets come camp and by some who keep horses there and all the other folks he lets enjoy his place that seem to forget to pick up after themselves.  I've also pulled out people who were stuck in the mud and helped with horse issues when he had an issue with a particular owner.

I consider it an honor to help the landowner in such a manner.  I would do it even if I didn't hunt out there.

3. 75% + of the meat killed out there goes to the land owner.  His deep freeze came from myself and a friend who gave it to him.

4.  When the land owner could hunt, we hunted together, the horses were both in the upper and lower pasture.  I hunted out of his horse trailer and golf cart with him many times.

Your Air Force/Cold War service is appreciated.  However, the behavior of your group was juvenile.  Driving around a pasture honking and walking down the road during deer season was irresponisble on your part.  I got out of the blind the second I knew you were there.  I park behind the shed in the lower pasture so as NOT to spook the animals.  I'm not "hiding" my truck.

Summary:

I am sorry that  happened to you. I had someone  steal two nice feeders I built one  time, my parents live  right  there on the  land. I've  said  it  before  and I will say it  again, "if  you want to steal from me  I will call 911, best bring the cleanup crew too."

Veterans

Summary:

Of course you are still keyed up.  It’s only been 5 years and you can't just turn that off.  There's no magic off button.  It is probably best that we all avoid bars.  It’s good that you're avoiding them too.  We get drunk; we get stupid.  When we're older and married nothing good ever comes out of getting smashed at a bar or nightclub.  Of course it was fun single w/ a fake ID at 18 and fresh out of boot camp.  Getting arrested, getting into a fight, injuring or killing someone, going to the hospital, cheating on your spouse, or putting yourself in a position to cheat on her.  Plus if we go out alone and get drunk, who's going to drive us home.  If you drink at all, do what I do and drink at home or drink w/ friends.  Don't drink alone or don't get smashed among strangers especially mouthy strangers.  Your guns will get taken away by other reasons than HR2640.  My wife thinks I'm nut job too, LOL.  That crap used to come out when I was drinking, but I learned to control it.  I almost got mine taken away b/c I got stupid one evening.  We just need to maintain control, talk about it, and it would probably best if we stop drinking altogether.  When I'm watching college football or hanging out w/ buddies, I’m drinking.  Basically we don't need to give the authorities a reason to take away our rights to have guns.  I never went through a 12-18 month combat tour so I can't say what you guys are going through.  My (unofficial) experience only lasted like 15 minutes where five soldiers died.  One was my roommate.  Your experience last much longer and is still fresh, mine was in 1998 so I've had time.  Plus I have two kids, an 8 and a 2 year old so my time and money are occupied.

That's why I love hunting and fishing.  When I have a deer in my sights or a fish on the line, nothing else matters.  For those few moments I'm free.  I'm not worrying about the mortgage, work, school, or nothing.  The government may be able to stop me from buying more, but they won't take away the ones I have now.  If ex-cons and other criminals find ways to have guns, then we should too.  There are ways around the system I'm sure.  I hope it doesn't come to that.

Trying to get city youth out and hunting can any one help with land to hog hunt.

Summary:

Everyone...

I've known Corey for the last 17 years... and he is truly speaking from the heart.  I have been there with him and his boys since they could walk, while still in diapers. (what a mess)

Anyways... He and I have tried to take every opportunity possible to include our kids, their friends, and any others... in all of our hunting trips.  I have been blessed by a very close friend, who allows me to manage his land for him... plus, I get to hunt it.  As such, I have tried to include Corey and all the kids, when I could.  Since it is not my personal property, it is kind of hard to take more of them out... trust me, we really would like to.

I was fortunate enough to have some free time...which actually means - my schedule and Corey's were able to match up.  I invited him and his boys, plus a couple of their friends from school out to go pig hunting.  We had 6 teenage boys and my two girls(8 and 1)... it was a blast.  All of the boys had an opportunity to shoot at pigs.  Two of them actually where able to make good shots on a 150+lb boar and a 100+lb sow.  Not to mention... Corey was able to take, what looked like a monster in the scope, a very nice.... um.... piglet.

Most of all... the kids had a great time.  They still bug us when the next trip will be.  A couple have mentioned how they would like to bring a different friend so they can have some fun also.

Now, we have all heard about how Texas if over run with pigs.  But, seems some folks want to monopolize off the little terrorizer's of the land.  If they are a problem on your property... then please allow us the opportunity to bring some kids out to experience the hunt.

We do not need anything fancy.. just some access to land where the piggies are a problem.  We have and always will, leave the area we hunt, cleaner than we found it.  It is something we have always done and have taught the kids.  We do not necessarily need a place with lodging on it... most of the kids enjoy camping... and a good camp fire... specially around dinner time.

Thank you all for checking out the post.

Have a great hunting season...
