F-16 ingests bird: Cockpit video of attempted restart and ultimate ejection from F-16

F-16 ingests bird: Cockpit video of attempted restart and ultimate ejection from F-16
Summary:

This post was emailed to me by Registered User, Lamar Smith

-----------------------------------------------------------

I thought you might find it interesting to see a crash from the cockpit of an airplane. Pretty interesting; it is an instructor pilot in the rear and a student in the front seat of an F-16.

A "Bird Strike," as seen through the Heads Up Display (HUD). You can see the bird flash by just prior to impacting the engine. You can hear the aircraft voice warning system telling them they have a problem and referring to the

"D-6 NL" which means there is no engine RPM. They made 2 attempts to relight the jet engine, but evidently there was too much damage from the bird strike and they had to get out.

These guys were very cool; note the heavy breathing... they certainly flew longer than one would expect before ejecting. Airspeed can be observed on the HUD's upper left corner. It goes down to the low 120's as they struggle to get the engine going again, but as the plane noses over and dives to earth it increases to at least 175 just before impact.

It just goes to show how quickly your day can go to pieces - 45 seconds from strike to ejection.

All and all, not bad. They ran the emergency checklist, made two relight attempts, and picked out a plowed field for impact before ejecting. You can follow the audio attached to it and hear the conversation between the pilot and instructor pilot and then the tower including the pilot saying they were punching out. The tower didn't seem to completely understand it all, and missed the significance of the last transmission. His last radio call, he's talking to an empty aircraft.

The video continues until impact, even after they both eject. A classic "buying the farm" as you can see the plow rows get bigger. A real nice job from the aircrew by keeping their cool and turning the aircraft away from populated areas.

No one hurt and no one killed but the dirty bird did cost the Taxpayers a "few" million dollars!

Charging Boar!

Charging Boar!
Summary:

this is the back story I am told about this video - pretty amazing no one was killed (by bullets, not the boar)...

Let me first start out this email with no one will believe this story
except for one fact, we have it all on VIDEO. Everyone knows that I love to
hunt wild boar on our ranch with family and friends. We have many stories of
how these pigs must be respected. There are stories of pigs attacking
individuals after being shot multiple times and living beyond what any
body could handle. Many call these old fishing stories. Well, there is a new
champion in the "you wont believe what happened out on the ranch
this weekend" contest. Here are the highlights and then enjoy the video.

1. A group of my friends go out to see if they can get a pig at dawn.
There are none to be found. Then, in the daylight, they spot a 250lb
boar about 300-400 yards away up on a hill. One of the guys has a 300 Winmag (big caliber) and takes a lucky shot and low and behold, hits this pig.
He shoots a second time and hits it again. It rolls down the hill and all
believed it for dead.

2. Several of the guys (the three who used to think they were tough
guys) go up on the hill to claim their trophy and next weeks dinner. As they
are searching, the pig sees them and starts to come after the first guy. He
is too close and can not get a sight picture in his scope. The pig, makes
eye contact, and charges. Feet apart, Hunter #2, armed only with a .45 cal
pistol, steps up and unloads 5 rounds at the hog. Luckily he is a good
shot and the pig, just about to gore hunter #1, is hit multiple times. Hunter
#1 and the pig tumble down the hill. All the while, hunter #1 is trying to
avoid being wrapped up with the pig.

3. After 2 rifle and 5 pistol rounds later, the pig must be dead. It is
not. The pig is now broad side to the camera man, Mr. Parker "I always
get the picture" Hathaway. Although quite far away, just to be safe, he has
another shooter take a shot with a 30-06. He hits the devil pig twice,
and again, it goes down all believing that it is dead.

4. They find the pig which is still alive and very pissed off. They
shoot him 3 more times with a high powered rifle and down it goes, appearing
to be dead again.

5. As our 3 hunters are looking for the pig, they can't believe what
they hear. The pig is chomping his tusks in a loud pissed off fashion
with the sound echoing throughout the canyon.

6. After a few moments, the chomping stops and being the brave hunters
that they are, they wait for a while to let that pig die. They finally
recover the hog which has the widest tusks that they have ever seen.

So, how is that for a story? Well, now you can watch the first charge
and get a feeling for just how crazy it can get out there.
