Sort your results:Existing Search Criteria:Refine Your Search:Search Results:The hogs you dont want...Summary: Well judging from your other post, the hogs are in the area already. A good feeding program will bring them running. By good I mean sustained. Get a feeder, I suggest 55gal or larger and a decent timer\slinger that is dependable. You dont have to spend much to get a decent timer these days. I have a couple that I got from Cabela's called the DayII and they have been very reliable. I got mine when they were 40 bucks but I think the price has gone up a little. Setup the feeder and keep it running and if there are hogs in the area they will find the corn pretty quickly. If you keep it running they will pattern around the feed times and then you're in business.
Off to West TexasSummary:
Thanks guys, it was a great trip. The good news just came to me this morning, the landowners called and said that the 12pt is coming back in to the feeder so I know that I did not wound and lose him. I hope my buddy Donny or one of his boys gets him next week. Scott, I usually get to hunt the place once a year so I will be back at them next December. My brother, Donny and I really want to purchase a place out in that area because of all the nice bucks that have been taken out that way in the last couple of years and because of the deer population in general.
HelpSummary:
In the Davy Crockett National Forest you will only need a valid Texas Huntintg License, hunter orange vest and cap or hat of some kind and a COMPASS is a must for every trip and I mean a must, no exceptions. I have been hunting the Forest for 15 years and I still get turned around sometimes if I dont have a compass. I have helped guys out that were completely lost and miles away from there camp that did not have a compass. If you are hunting the Sam Houston NF I can't help you because I have never hunted it, but I think it is bow only. Shoot me an email if you are hunting the Davy Crockett and I will turn you on to a couple of spots to start hunting. Also, be careful in the Davy Crockett because there is some of the State land, Unit 116 and 117, you will need a State Annual Public Hunting Permit to hunt or even be driving thru this property and the game wardens don't play up there. Make sure you tag your deer before you drag it out of the forest because they will ticket you if it is not properly tagged. Also, you have to camp in the designated camps or you will get a ticket. Don't cut down any wood for fires but there should be plenty laying around from fallen pine trees. I can tell you where there is a shower that costs a couple of bucks and is not far from the camp off of Forest Road 524 and where there are some prime hunting spots no more than a mile from the camp. If you take your ATV you need the following, helmet, eye protection, and state registration. You can get the registration at the same place you get you tags for you auto and it cost $12.(the tags are only good thru March so if you have an ATV you have to renew them in March if you go scout in the spring). You can only drive across the roads not down them or you will get a ticket. Get a Map of the forest, they can be purchased at the store in Kinnard for $7. Let me know if need more information and watch out because there are plenty of huge bucks running around in that area. Get into your stand early and if you have the stamina hunt all day because the other hunters will push the deer around. Amistad Bow HuntingSummary: Well I guess if we have some takers lets go ahead and try to get some dates setup. We should shoot for late November or early December, the bucks should be coming to the horns pretty well and chasing does. We should also be able to setup some drives for the Mouflon and Aoudad, who knows but it all sounds like a blast. If there is a place to setup we can take the camper if the weather is going to be bad. Otherwise, tents are fine with me. The only conflict is I usually go on a rifle hunt on the 1st or 2nd weekend in December. If everybody has the Friday after Thanksgiving off that could be and option.
Options near San AntonioSummary: I have never hunted the SHNF but I do hunt the Davy Crockett National Forest and a couple of the TPWD WMA areas. I have hunted Aquilla WMA and saw both bucks and doe. If you dont want to spend a ton of money and you don't have friends with land, public land will be your only other option. I can give you some pointers and leads on where to hunt if you go to DCNF or Aquilla. You will have plenty of public land around SA for some dove and waterfoul hunting if you get the Public Hunting Permit from TPWD. If you have questions let me know.
Food plotsSummary: I was looking into the http://www.buckforage.com/, supposed to be some really good stuff . If you plant it along with their Buck Forage Chicory it supposed to be a great all season plot for Texas. But, for $100 per acre I think it is too steep for my blood. Last year I planted Biologic-Green Patch Plus and the deer were all over it all season long. You can get 10 lbs of Biologic at Walmart for about $6.50 which will plant 1/4 acre, that is $26 bucks an acre, not a bad price. I bought some of the Green Patch Plus last night that I'm going to mix with a couple hundred lbs of Seed Oats for a plot out at the ranch. I was thinking of planting this around the tank also, do you think the ducks would feed on it also?
