Deer Fight Interrupted by a Bullet

Deer Fight Interrupted by a Bullet
Summary:

I was shocked that someone would shoot a deer at 10 yards while distracted fighting another buck. This is a great reminder to listen to the full story before making assumptions. Great shooting.

Black Buck With a Bow

Black Buck With a Bow
Summary: this is a great post - thank you for sharing

Would you shoot or hope?

Would you shoot or hope?
Summary:

what is the hunting pressure on the surrounding lands?

Are the neighbors running a big protein feeder also or are the deer motivated to come to your land for the best meal, water, and habitat.

How many other bucks like this have you seen on your land?

Do you already have a deer like this on your wall?

That is a great deer. If this was our family land in East Texas where I have never seen a deer that nice in my lifetime, he would die.

If this was my land in the Hill Country where I know that only one neighbor hunts, I would let him go and hope he makes it to breed more does. Last year, when I saw two young 10 points on our land, I went to the neighbor and told him all the reasons why we should not kill them. I don't know if he listened, but at least I tried to spread the message of "don't shoot young big bucks".

If this deer was on my land in Travis County (Austin), where I know there is no hunting pressure, I would leave him with the intent to bow hunting once he is an old mature buck. Hopefully he wouldn't get hit by a car in the meantime.

How many acres per hunter do you recommend?

Summary:

I think you really want to consider:

what region of Texas (differences is habitat, water, etc.)

is there supplemental feed or food plots?

are you just looking to shoot a deer and have fun or do you really care about mature trophy deer hunting?

and finally, from a safety perspective, think about rifle hunters and their proximity to each other and whether or not you mandate staying in the blind because of how close hunters might be to each other.

With all that said I think you end up with ONE high quality buck per 500 acres in South Texas and West Texas; and maybe ONE per 300 acres in East Texas.

The Hill Country seems different because there are so many deer and so many small properties and if you have water, the deer congregate from all surrounding areas. In general the deer are the poorest quality, but I have seen places with NO quality deer and I have seen times (like right now around good water and protein feeders) when I have seen four great quality hill country bucks at the same time on a 82 acre free range parcel.

Deer Aging (An offseason tough one)

Deer Aging (An offseason tough one)
Summary:

Because we are in the summer, I will say 4 for the deer on the right.

I would guess the buck on the left is 6 -  but you didn't ask.

CHL Class Taken - Now What to Carry?

Summary:

Duckwhacker,

My wife carries a .38 like what you are thinking about for the same reason of not wanting to deal with a semi-auto.

I carry a .40 Sig P226 in my bag, but it is really bulky for concealed carry in Texas except in winter. The .45 of course is way to big.

When in Houston in the summer, I carry a double-barrel derringer with .410 buck shot. Small, only two shots, but it is so small and easy to carry that I can have it on me comfortably. It is a great snake gun with dove shot while dove, quail or turkey hunting.

ANOTHER GREAT AXIS BUCK 04/27/2008!

ANOTHER GREAT AXIS BUCK 04/27/2008!
Summary:

That looks like fun. Realistically, do you think you have any bucks over 35"? If so, what would you charge?

It is very smart to post photos like this and link back to your site as a way of getting the word out about your business. I look forward to seeing more photos, maybe a video of your herd?

How old is this one?

How old is this one?
Summary: based on the first photos, and wanting to always be conservative, I am going with 3.5. If you are in doubt, don't cut a tree down or shoot a buck, you can usually cut it down or shoot it later. They are much harder to replace if you were wrong.

Stephens County Hunting

Summary:

Free range 160-180 class whitetail deer are tremendous specimens. Depending on how much land you have leased, and the discipline of the others on the lease, hold out for the buck that is over 5.5 years old, and if he is bigger than any other buck you have ever shot, take him. If you are willing to risk not taking a buck, then hold out for that crazy huge 160+ if he walks out. But, what if he is 4.5? Do you left him breed with your does for another year or two, or do you shoot? That is the hard question.

Backyard Buck

Backyard Buck
Summary: I hope another year of protein and he will be ready
