average hunters priced out of hunting

average hunters priced out of hunting
Summary:

Hornhunter,

I was talking with Linda Campbell at Texas Parks & Wildlife about the cost of hunting in Texas and she had some great comments about the underutilized the Public Hunting opportunities.

Read page 108 in the new Outdoor Annual for 2008-2009.

Or, visit http://tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/hunt/public/

I had no idea they gave away 5500+ large game hunts each year; or that there is 55000 acres of walk-in birding hunting near urban areas; or 49 walk-in youth hunting areas, or that they give away 1200+ youth hunts for large game, exotics, and turkey each year.

For example, I looked up buck hunts in Travis County and there were only 632 applicants for 18 permits that include 1 buck, 2 does, and unlmited feral hogs. Last year of the 18 hunters, it says 4 harvested a buck. Not bad for a $10 raffle ticket with a 1 in 35 chance of winning.

Antler Development in Free Range Bucks by Dr. Kroll

Antler Development in Free Range Bucks by Dr. Kroll
Summary: Antler Development in Free Range Bucks by Dr. Kroll I recorded this presentation by Dr. Kroll and Ben (didn't catch his last name) during the recent Texas Deer Association banquet. The video quality is horrible, but the audio is very interesting. I was there to listen and learn, and as he spoke,...

We will see if this buck survives for long with a hurt leg

We will see if this buck survives for long with a hurt leg
Summary: I was sad to see this buck is hurt. Although free range, I have spent enough time around him since he was a yearling that I can get within 10 yards of him before he spooks. He is one of the bucks I have been free choice protein feeding for the last 15 months hoping to photograph his "coming of age....

Backyard Buck

Backyard Buck
Summary: How do they know? He disappeared the week season started and didn't show up again until Jan.11th. I was testing a new camera so the focal length is off, but I wanted to share my frustration with you all.

First year results protein feeding free range bucks in Travis County

First year results protein feeding free range bucks in Travis County
Summary: This buck is one of three on my land. I have not seen any of them in literally 6-8 weeks. I was concerned that someone had shot them. Somehow, they must know that buck season is over and decided to come back out. How do they know this???? He is still too young to harvest, but continues to show great...

Video of Dove using Elcan Scope at 16.5x Zoom about 70 yards away
Summary: 16.5x Zoom Video of Dove using Elcan Scope. The purpose of this video is obviously not to suggest shooting a dove with a rifle, but rather just showing how on a deer hunt, you might use the scope to photograph or video other animals you encounter. If you back off to 9x or 11x Zoom, the image quali...
