Texas is home to the most varied and impressive population of exotic animals in the nation, and the Texas hill country provides a particularly productive habitat for these species.  Shonto Ranch offers guided hunting trips for a range of exotics, including axis deer, blackbuck antelope, fallow deer, red stag, scimitar horned oryx, red sheep, mouflon, texas dall, any many others.

Our exotics hunting guests are guided exclusively by our resident wildlife biologist and hunting guide, C.D. McGehee.  During your exotics hunt, it will just be you, C.D., and your guest(s) on the ranch, and C.D. will do everything possible to put you each on that special trophy and give you the hunting experience of a lifetime.

The gray fox is essentially an inhabitant of wooded areas, particularly mixed hardwood forests.  It is common throughout the wooded sections east of the shortgrass plains and in the pinyon-juniper community above the low lying deserts.

Only two specimens of grizzly bears are available from Texas.  According to Vernon Bailey, who wrote of this bear in his "Biological Survey of Texas," a large and very old male grizzly was killed in the Davis Mountains in October, 1890 by C. O. Finley and John Z. Means. 

Nearly a century ago, wildlife biologists estimated there were about 500 desert bighorn sheep in Texas. Half a century later there were none. Today there are more than 800 of these majestic animals in the state and counting.

We began raising whitetail deer as a hobby in 1999. Since that time, we have completely overhauled our program to stay on top of the finest genetics. With recent additions to our pens such as a top of line handling facility to minimized stress on our animals, a bottling facility which we pioneered Nanny goats raising our fawns to promote survivability, not to mention gentle as bottle fawns. We have had a success rate of 100% survivable fawns being goat raised of Northern and Southern bloodlines. We are extremely proud of our most recent addition of Monarch II, 264 2/8 @ 3 years old. Monarch II was purchased through the Texas Top 20 Premier Breeders Deer Auction in August of 2007. Monarch II was born and raised on Robert Williams' Trophy Ranch. We are excited about our new addition and looking for great genetics out of Monarch II. Backwoods' strives for herd health, detailed record-keeping, and top of the line genetics.
