The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service released its preliminary report on mid-continent breeding ducks and habitats, based on surveys conducted in May and early June. Total duck populations were estimated at 37.3 million breeding ducks on the surveyed area. This estimate represents a 9 percent decline over last year's estimate of 41.2 million birds, but remains 11 percent above the 1955-2007 long-term average. Late Summer Habitat Conditions in CanadaSummary: Habitat conditions have remained fairly stable over the past month. Conditions in eastern Canada remain very good while conditions are more varied in western Canada where the warm, dry weather continues. With few exceptions, waterfowl production was average or better throughout the country this year.
Supreme Court Decision Bad for Wetlands, Hunters and AnglersSummary: Memphis, Tenn., June 19, 2006 – A 5-4 U.S. Supreme Court wetlands decision today further confused decades of federal protection of wetlands throughout the country under the Clean Water Act. The decision is disappointing, because hunters and anglers understand that wetlands are the most productive fish and wildlife habitat in the world.

Ducks Unlimited Unveils Restoration Plans for Wightman Lake: Sixty-five Acres of Wetlands to be RestoredSummary: Restoration of Ducks Unlimited's (DU) Wightman Lake property continues to move forward as funding has been secured. Plans call for the restoration of 65 acres of wetlands and enhancement of 75 acres of bottomland hardwoods benefiting waterfowl and other migratory birds. Restoration plans also include innovative techniques for improving water quality and providing habitat for the decurrent false aster, a federally listed threatened plant.
DU Receives $440,000 for Coastal Marsh Restoration in Southeast LouisianaSummary: Ducks Unlimited (DU) has been awarded a North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA) grant to restore 580 acres of coastal marsh habitat in Jefferson Parish, La. The project is estimated to cost $1.33 million and partners will contribute approximately $890,000 which will be matched with $440,000 in NAWCA grant funds to support coastal wetlands restoration efforts.
DU and Partners Granted NAWCA Funds for Wetland Restoration in KansasSummary: Ducks Unlimited (DU) and its partners have been awarded a North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA) grant to conserve 1,397 acres on and around the Jamestown Wildlife Area in Cloud County, Kan. More than $2 million in partner funds will be matched with nearly $1 million in NAWCA grant funds to support wetland restoration, enhancement and acquisition activities.
