Five Target Range Projects Receive Funding SupportSummary: AUSTIN, Texas — Five target shooting facility projects, including a new indoor range and hunter education classroom on the Brenham High School campus, will be sharing $420,000 in matching grants for construction and renovation, pending availability of federal assistance funds earmarked for the state’s hunter education program.
During its Aug. 24 public meeting, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission approved an action item to allow the department’s executive director to execute contracts with the grant applicants.
Whooping Crane Population Continues to SoarSummary: The tallest bird in North America has something special to "whoop" about. The Aransas National Wildlife Refuge today announced the highest numbers of endangered whooping cranes are wintering in Texas in approximately the last 100 years. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Whooping Crane Coordinator Tom Stehn completed a census flight on December 13 and accounted for 237 whooping cranes. The current population exceeds by 17 the previous high of 220 whoopers present in the fall of 2005.

An ever-expanding human population continues to encroach upon the alligator’s domain, driving a trend of increased encounters between alligators and people.
New Texas Regulations to Protect Wild Turtles, Nongame WildlifeSummary: he Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission on May 24 approved a measure that will prohibit commercial collection of all wild turtles from public waters and public land in the state, but will still allow collection of three varieties of turtles on private property, including ranch stock tanks and farm ponds. The turtle provisions are part of new Texas nongame regulations that create a “white list” of 84 species which can be collected and sold and prohibit the commercial collection of all other nongame animals not on the list.
