I come from a family that never hunted it wasn t that they were against hunting, just never had the opportunity to experience how amazing the great outdoors can be. Since plinking cans with a bb gun was so much fun, at the age of 16 a neighbor boy asked if I wanted to join him in taking the hunter s education course I agreed and shortly after getting certified, my step dad took me to purchase a shotgun for September dove hunting this was just the beginning of something incredible.

Weekly migratory bird hunting reports are posted from early September through early February. High Plains Mallard Management Unit Decoying action has been solid for Canada geese over plowed, milo and corn. Strong numbers of birds have been seen near Dumas, Etter and Spearman. Good numbers of snows are on Lake Etter. Duck hunting has been hit or miss due to lack of water on playa lakes. Successful hunters have allowed ponds to rest longer between hunts. More ducks are using larger reservoirs than ever before. Sandhill cranes have readily decoyed over gray spreads. Prospects are fair to good. North Zone Duck Duck hunting remains fair at best. Lack of water in the region has encouraged ducks to keep heading south to find suitable habitat. More mallards have shown, but the brunt of the greenhead population has not arrived. Most sloughs and river bottoms are dry, but those with water are holding solid numbers of wood ducks. Gadwalls and wigeons have been taken in shallow coves of lak...

Weekly migratory bird hunting reports are posted from early September through early February. High Plains Mallard Management Unit Duck hunting has fair at best for mallards, wigeons, gadwalls and teal. Feed lots have been best. Diver ducks have been hitting deeper playas and reservoirs. Some lakes have been pumped with water to help wildlife sustain drought conditions. Canada geese are best over wheat and corn. More Canadas showed on Lake Etter this week. Sandhill crane numbers are good. Specklebellies have been reliable as well. Prospects are fair. North Zone Duck Gadwalls, wigeons and teal have been taken in the shallow coves of area lakes and reservoirs. Canvasbacks have been reported on Lake Fork, Toledo Bend, Sam Rayburn and Lake O Pines. Caddo Lake has seen gadwalls, divers and ringed necks on the big waters. Sloughs, backwaters and bayous are dry and dusty, so most ducks have taken refuge on the lakes or have continued south to the coast. Hunting has been good on the coas...

Landowner Spotlight Schoolar Ranch a deer population success story

An undisputed icon of the Hill Country, the white tailed deer perfectly embodies the wild beauty and raw elegance of this part of Texas. This popular native wildlife provides immense enjoyment, abundant hunting opportunities, and a huge economic benefit to the residents of the Edwards Plateau. But in the wake of expanding development and consequent reduced natural predators, the numbers of white tailed deer have exploded, making deer overpopulations one of the most critical land management issues facing the region. Without the same thick and in your face reality of dense Ashe juniper growth, for example, many landowners often don t recognize the vital importance and obligation to the land and the deer to manage deer population growth. But for those who do, the rewards are great. In addition to a strong land ethic, managing a deer herd requires hard work, persistence, and, ultimately, the willingness to utilize help. Few landowners better exemplify these attributes than Ma...

SCI s attorneys are seeking assistance with the lawsuit SCI recently filed to challenge the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service s 2005 decision to classify captive populations of the scimitar horned oryx, dama gazelle and addax as endangered. SCI is working with several owners of herds of one or more of the three species to prepare declarations that demonstrate SCI s and SCI members interest in these species and the harm that SCI and its members have suffered and will continue to suffer due to the restrictions that come with an endangered species classification. If you own a herd of one or more of the three antelope species and would be willing to provide SCI with a sworn statement to help us present our case to the court, please contact SCI s Director of Litigation, Anna Seidman, aseidman safariclub.org or 202 543 8733. SCI s legal team is also looking for SCI members who have concrete plans to hunt members of one or more of the three species from a U.S. captive herd in the future. I...

Weekly migratory bird hunting reports are posted from early September through early February. North Zone Dove Corn, milo and sunflowers continue to produce near Amarillo and Dumas. Feed lot tanks have held birds in the afternoon since few playas are wet. Abilene and Lubbock hunters have seen the same results. Red River hunters have seen their best shoots around treelines and watering troughs. More birds moved into the area this week with the cooler temperatures, and expect more with the forthcoming full moon. The season runs through Oct. 23. Prospects are fair. Central Zone Dove Whitewings continue to find corn and milo fields in and around San Antonio, though hunter participation is down since the opener. New birds showed last week around Katy, Brookshire and Columbus. Beaumont and Dayton fields saw an influx of mourning doves with the cooler temps. Hankamer is holding more mourning doves than whitewings. Many hunters along the coast have said they haven t seen whitewing number...
