Saltwater Fishing in Texas

What are the most common saltwater fish that you enjoy fishing for in Texas The first problem with this question is that I have found it near impossible to find a list of saltwater sportfish available in Texas. So, I created one below. TPWD only lists the fish for which there are rules, limits, etc. Some lists are written by people who talk about fish they catch for sport not to eat while others talk about fish they catch to eat not sport and many just don t care about the name of the fish they catch, they just like fishing on the Texas Coast. Another factor that makes this list so difficult to create is that people have different names for the same fish Dorado, Mahi Mahi, Dolphin . Finally, there is some debate as to whether certain fish are available on the Texas Coast. Sooooo......... Below is a list of fish I have created. It would be very interesting to see people s comments about 1 This fish doesn t exist in Texas to the best of your knowledge... 2 This fish...

Freshwater Fishing in Texas

There are many types of freshwater fish to catch in Texas. Some are native. Some are not. TPWD does not recognize Florida Black Bass, yet I have heard of people building Trophy Bass Ponds and stocking them with Florida Bass and a Florida Hybrid. The same goes for Tilapia. Not to mention, certain fish like Walleye, Pike and Muskie are fish common to the North, but at certain dams in Texas where the water is always cold, I have heard stories of these fish being caught. Now, to be clear, I have not ever caught one, but the point is they apparently exist in Texas. So, along with my related post in the Saltwater Forum, we spent many hours talking to many people to create a list of freshwater fish in Texas. The problems with creating this list are interesting 1. People call fish by different names. White Bass is a Sand Bass apparently. 2. People catch Sunfish, call them Sunfish or another name, and don t care or don t even know there are six types in Texas. 3. Like we said above, TPWD ...

The Double Haul by Tom Rosenbauer illustrations by Bob White Whitefish Studio Excerpted from The Orvis Fly Fishing Guide , Revised Updated Edition The Lyons Press, January 2007, 288 pages A VARIATION of the overhead cast, known as the double haul, is the final step in increasing line speed and thus adding length to your casts. The faster a fly line moves, the more momentum it has. Greater momentum allows you shoot longer lengths of line. The double haul is used long casts, over 60 feet, and or when there s a lot of wind because greater line speed will overcome either obstacle. The double haul can be done efficiently only with weight forward or shooting head lines. Both of the lines utilize about 30 feet of head or thicker line the remainder of the line is thin diameter running line. It s easy to see this junction in a shooting taper line, because the head and fly line are different types of materials, and sometimes different colors. With weight forward...
