I ve been thinking about this proposed regulation that the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is considering allow hunters to use silencers and sound suppressors on rifles to hunt deer. I m not sure how I feel about it. I already use a silenced firearm for whitetails. It s called a bow. The real discussion is about rifles altered so that the sound is mostly silenced or suppressed. None of the silencers I m familiar with are totally silent. And all of them compromise the speed and power of the bullet. When you fire a rifle, the bullet leaves the barrel at something in excess of 1,100 feet per second faster than the speed of sound. That crack you hear is basically a small sonic boom. To eliminate that portion of the noise, the velocity of the bullet has to be reduced within the gun, and that impacts the hunter s effective range. It s a matter of physics. The proposal that Texas Parks and Wildlife commissioners have sent to the Texas Register for public comment actu...

Six Tips for Better Shot Placement

Nice article written by Kevin Wilson for BigGameHunt.net Hunt long enough and you ll see some weird things. My own list of odd occurrences seems endless. I ve seen an arrow pass square through the center of a bear s chest with the bruin collapsing immediately. Then, not 20 minutes later, that same bear leapt to his feet and scampered away, never to be seen again. On another occasion I witnessed a fellow shoot a moose that collapsed on the spot. Upon close inspection, there wasn t a bullet hole to be found anywhere on the moose not even the head. Then there was the time I saw an arrow pass clean through the body of a Canada goose. As though nothing had happened the goose flew off into the horizon and just kept on flying. Then there s whitetails. I ve seen countless trophy class deer suck up bullets like they were shot with a pellet gun. Once I even saw a 350 pound whitetail shot four times with a .338 at close range under 50 yards , the best shot was square through the chest as ...

Buck Strikes Back Deer Hunter Injured

The article below was published in the Sedalia Democrat on Nov. 30. You should really make sure your deer is dead before you try to take him home. Poke the eye with the gun from far away or something, but just make SURE he s really really dead. Waking up before the sun, layering on the camouflage and sitting still and quiet in the woods for hours can become a headache for some hunters, but for one Sedalia man his hunting season turned out to be more than just a headache. The second day of firearm season began just like any other for Randy Goodman, 47. He headed to his tree stand northwest of Sedalia Nov. 16 and called his son, who was hunting near by to wish him good luck. As daylight broke, a doe crossed his path and then two more. All of the sudden something came up beside them, Goodman said. With his Remington .270 rifle in hand, he shot a nice buck broadside. The buck s front legs collapsed as it ran toward a fence and flipped over to the other side. A second shot ...

How to Score Whitetail Antlers

Say thank you to San Miguel Outdoors for releasing a How To on scoring typical and non typical antlers... Whitetailed Deer are classified into two scoring groups typical and non typical. Although they are measured in the same manner, they are separated because non typical antlers would otherwise dominate the records. To determine if the rack is to be scored typical or non typical, first determine the number of normal points. The typical pattern of mature whitetail antler development is an unbranched main beam that normally develops from three to seven or more unbranched points at spaced intervals. Whitetails can show an almost infinite variety in number and location of points. Normal, measurable points, must be at least one inch long, and more long than wide at some location at least one inch from the tip of the projection. Once the normal points have been identified, the remaining points are evaluated to determi...
