Is Your Deer Hunting Lease Reaching Its Full Potential By Jeremy Flinn Buckscore Wildlife Biologist Each year deer hunters invest millions of dollars into hunting lease properties, including food plot planting, constructing deer stands, and especially putting gas into our tanks. A large portion of hunt clubs in the South lease their land from industrial timber companies. Nearly 85 of those white tailed deer leases practice some form of Trophy or Quality Deer Management QDM . But at the end of the season, after all the hard work and hunting hours are through, is your deer hunting lease really becoming the deer hunting mecca you dreamed of It was a hot July day as we walked through the pine stand. Last year s thinning had allowed much more sunlight to reach the ground, in turn sparking the growth of natural deer food. We headed out to a large food plot opening in which the club had called Centerfield because of its location on the property. Large, umbrella shaped weeds t...

David Vance s Lake Fork Report

February is big Bass time here on Lake Fork. For all you fisherman that have been waiting for those big females to start moving to the shallows, now is the time. Lake Fork is about 6 feet low but still in great shape for another fantastic year of fishing in 2012. The fishing has been good for size the last few days. Numbers of quality Bass can be found starting to stage on the timbered secondary points and ditches, and creeks near spawning flats. Starting at the mouths of the creeks and working your way back is the best approach to locating pre spawn Bass this time of year. Dearing a cold front the Bass will be more active and concentrated on main lake and or secondary points. On warmer days, you will find that the bite is better at the very back of the creeks. Once you locate a fish or two it is good to make another pass back through the area as there will usually be several more in that location and come back and hit it again later in the day. Fishing in depths of 4 10 feet has be...

I ve been thinking about this proposed regulation that the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is considering allow hunters to use silencers and sound suppressors on rifles to hunt deer. I m not sure how I feel about it. I already use a silenced firearm for whitetails. It s called a bow. The real discussion is about rifles altered so that the sound is mostly silenced or suppressed. None of the silencers I m familiar with are totally silent. And all of them compromise the speed and power of the bullet. When you fire a rifle, the bullet leaves the barrel at something in excess of 1,100 feet per second faster than the speed of sound. That crack you hear is basically a small sonic boom. To eliminate that portion of the noise, the velocity of the bullet has to be reduced within the gun, and that impacts the hunter s effective range. It s a matter of physics. The proposal that Texas Parks and Wildlife commissioners have sent to the Texas Register for public comment actu...

Wanted Spring Turkey lease

I would like a lease for Spring Turkey season one month. I am a safe and clean hunter. I normally hunt alone, but may want to bring one friend on occasion. I generally only take one or two birds. I have hunted for many years and will leave the Jakes and smaller birds to mature I hunt for the sport and the trophy and not just a needless kill. Prefer a lease within about 250 miles of Houston if at all possible. Please contact me at icmcumin gmail.com. Thanks

I went to Google today and searched for buy wildlife dart gun and it came back with nothing. I have heard from several people over the years about using dart guns to manage horses, cattle, exotics, wild hogs, and of course, the huge trophy whitetail deer breeders. If you have a dart gun, what brand is it and where did you buy it Would you recommend it If your friend has one, do you mind asking them the make model and whether they would recommend it Thank you, jason

Looking For A Family Place

I am looking for a small place 200 to 500 acres for my family and I to enjoy. I am a management minded hunter moving back to the Houston area from South Texas. I am looking for a place within an hour or so of town, preferably southwest or west. North or East is fine as well. I grew up hunting East Texas. Willing to maintain the property, and manage the wildlife as needed. Does not have to be trophy quality animals by any means, as long as there are animals in the area to pull in. As i said, just looking for a place that my family and I can enjoy together. My kids are avid outdoorsmen, and understand management practice well. You can reach me anytime at 361 774 3367, or by email at jamesnelson2 clearwire.net . Thank You
