Does Hunting Deer With A Silencer Matter To You

I ve been thinking about this proposed regulation that the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is considering allow hunters to use silencers and sound suppressors on rifles to hunt deer. I m not sure how I feel about it. I already use a silenced firearm for whitetails. It s called a bow. The real discussion is about rifles altered so that the sound is mostly silenced or suppressed. None of the silencers I m familiar with are totally silent. And all of them compromise the speed and power of the bullet. When you fire a rifle, the bullet leaves the barrel at something in excess of 1,100 feet per second faster than the speed of sound. That crack you hear is basically a small sonic boom. To eliminate that portion of the noise, the velocity of the bullet has to be reduced within the gun, and that impacts the hunter s effective range. It s a matter of physics. The proposal that Texas Parks and Wildlife commissioners have sent to the Texas Register for public comment actu...

The Story of Texas State Parks To Love the Beautiful

Texas, like other parts of the arid Southwest, resisted easy settlement. The rugged characteristics of the frontier were retained in some parts of Texas as late as the 1960s. But in most places, the taming of the frontier had a dramatic effect on the land and wildlife. In the natural course of events, the pioneers cut down the forest. They plowed the land and cleared out the brush from ditches, ravines, and woodlots. They drained the swamps and built mills on the brooks and streams. Texans were not blind to the changes in their state. As early as the 1860s, Texas and several other western states passed the first laws to protect fish and wildlife against commercial killing. In 1907, under pressure from sportsmen, the Texas legislature followed the lead set down by other states and created a game agency to protect the state s wildlife resources. The Texas Game, Fish, Oyster Commission faced many obstacles in protecting Texas wildlife. Both funding and legal authority ...

Optifade Hunting Clothes Make Hunters Invisible

Attention all deer As hunting season approaches, please be aware that the guy who s about to shoot you may be invisible. Or so he thinks. W.L Gore and Associates, working with the HyperStealth Corporation have designed a line of hunting clothes they call Optifade . These clothes, they say, fool the deer s vision system at its roots, meaning when a hunter slips into his cap, vest, pants and hood not be seen. Click Here to read more. yes, this takes you to NPR website but still interesting Has anyone else heard about this before Or better yet tried it

Hundreds of people in Texas and Oklahoma are fleeing their homes today as fast burning wildfires, which have already destroyed more than 25 homes, burn throughout the neighboring states. In Texas, firefighters worked through the night Tuesday to make progress on a fast moving blaze in the state s northern section that has already destroyed at least 25 homes in the resort community of Possum Kingdom Lake, about 75 miles west of Fort Worth. The 101 Ranch fire in Palo Pinto County grew to about 7,500 acres on Wednesday afternoon, and it was unclear how much had been contained, the Texas Forest Service reported. The fire was centered around the south side of Possum Kingdom Lake outside Brad, about 50 miles west of the Dallas Fort Worth metro area, but observers on the opposite shore were forced to pull back when winds around 20 mph carried embers across the lake. The fire had destroyed at least 20 homes, according to the Forest Service, and another 125 households were evac...

Six Tips for Better Shot Placement

Nice article written by Kevin Wilson for BigGameHunt.net Hunt long enough and you ll see some weird things. My own list of odd occurrences seems endless. I ve seen an arrow pass square through the center of a bear s chest with the bruin collapsing immediately. Then, not 20 minutes later, that same bear leapt to his feet and scampered away, never to be seen again. On another occasion I witnessed a fellow shoot a moose that collapsed on the spot. Upon close inspection, there wasn t a bullet hole to be found anywhere on the moose not even the head. Then there was the time I saw an arrow pass clean through the body of a Canada goose. As though nothing had happened the goose flew off into the horizon and just kept on flying. Then there s whitetails. I ve seen countless trophy class deer suck up bullets like they were shot with a pellet gun. Once I even saw a 350 pound whitetail shot four times with a .338 at close range under 50 yards , the best shot was square through the chest as ...
