Weekly migratory bird hunting reports are posted from early September through early February. High Plains Mallard Management Unit Duck season ended Jan. 29 in the High Plains and results were below average due to the drought and lack of playa lakes. Goose season runs through Feb. 5, and outfitters who were skeptical about the season from the onset have said this season has been a banner year for decoying action. The Light Goose Conservation Order in the West Zone begins Feb.6, but outfitters are expected limited participation. North Zone Duck Duck season ended Jan. 29 and hunters agree the season was fair at best. Late season rains helped habitat and attracted more ducks, but overall hunter participation was down due to lack of water and birds in traditional backwater bayous and sloughs. Wood ducks were fair along wet timber throughout the season, and mallards improved in January, especially along the swelling Trinity River. Lots of divers were reported on Lake O Pines, Caddo La...

Weekly migratory bird hunting reports are posted from early September through early February. High Plains Mallard Management Unit Strong numbers of geese remain on Lake Etter and other watering sources near Spearman, but roosting sources remain a premium with drought conditions. Unseasonably mild conditions have encouraged geese to sit longer on roost ponds. Lubbock hunters have scored fair to good shoots over plowed ground. Sandhill crane hunting has been fair for decoying action. Duck hunting has been fair to good on playas and feed lots, though hunter participation has waned. Duck season ends at sunset Jan. 29. Goose season runs through Feb. 5. Prospects are fair to good. North Zone Duck Duck season closes at sunset Jan. 29. Fair to good hunts were posted around Franklin, Navasota and Crockett. Hunter participation has been minimal with mild conditions and poor duck numbers. Biologist Jared Laing said strange weather seems to have moved birds. Previously productive areas like...

Weekly migratory bird hunting reports are posted from early September through early February. High Plains Mallard Management Unit Outfitters reported great goose hunting this week with light pressure late in the season. Canada geese have readily decoyed over scouted fields. Limited watering sources have allowed hunters to pattern movement. Duck numbers are fair, but few people are hunting. Most ducks are hanging on feed lots and large reservoirs. Estimates are that less than 5 percent of playas are wet. Goose season runs through Feb.5. Prospects are fair to good. North Zone Duck Biologist Jared Laing said recent aerial surveys indicated scattered bird counts along Central and East Texas. Good densities of ducks on small and medium sized ponds near the upper Trinity, Sulfur and Sabine rivers. Water bodies along the Brazos and Red rivers are holding small concentrations. Deep Southeast Texas recorded low counts as well. Canvasbacks, scaup, ringed necks and a few goldeneyes have be...

Weekly migratory bird hunting reports are posted from early September through early February. High Plains Mallard Management Unit Excellent decoying action for Canada geese has been reported throughout the week. What had the looks of a lackluster season at best with drought conditions persisting has turned in to a solid season of hunting according to outfitters. However, the bleak forecast has affected hunter participation. Best hunts have come over corn and wheat. Larger Canada geese have moved in to Texas with freezing temperatures to the north. Duck hunting has been fair to good with recent precipitation, but few hunters have taken advantage. Canada goose hunting remains solid near Knox City, but ducks there have been iffy. Prospects are fair to good. North Zone Duck The region received needed rain early this week that helped hunting in backwater sloughs and bayous. Wood ducks have been good in wet sloughs and bayous. Divers, including scaup, ringed necks, canvasbacks and a f...
