CROSSBOWS OR COMPOUNDS WHY NOT BOTH

With the signing of HB 968 by Gov. Perry, Texas passed a new law allowing crossbows to be used during archery season in 254 Texas counties. Grayson County is the exception, only conventional archery equipment longbows, recurves and compounds will be allowed here. Previously hunters could only hunt with longbows, recurves or compound bows during their special season, which opens before the general firearms whitetail season, crossbows were legal but only during the firearms season. I m amazed at the controversy that s occurred over the passing of this new law. Being a long time bowhunter and on the pro staff of the largest bow manufacturer in the county, I have a pretty good feel for the pulse of the bowhunter. Until this autumn, we had the woods all to ourselves for a month BEFORE we were joined by rifle hunters. This tradition in Texas is shared by hunters from all the other states with the exception of Pennsylvania and Michigan, where crossbows are legal during archery season...

World Record Exotic Taken in Kerr County A Client of the Texas Hunt Lodge, a Hunt Package provider near Kerrville, TX, took the new World Record Yak, last Monday, February 16 th . E. Tay Bond and his wife, Stacey, of Conroe, Tx booked the hunt with Guide and Texas Hunt Lodge owner, Aaron Bulkley, back in early February. The hunt took place on the Las Catarinas Ranch in northwest Kerr County off of Hwy 83. The World Record Yak Hunt was exciting for everyone involved. E. Tay Bond was guided by Aaron Bulkley and the ranch owner, J.A. Whittenburg V. Just the morning of the hunt, Bond at the last minute, decided to hunt the Yak with a Crossbow rather than Rifle which he brought along for the trip. He sighted in, and shot for the 1 st time, the Horton 175 Legacy bow just an hour before the hunt began, and once he hit bulls eye on his first two practice shots, he knew his and the Yak s destiny for that day. The hunt started around 10 00am Mond...

Weekly migratory bird hunting reports are posted from early September through early February. North Zone Dove Hunters near Lubbock had good shoots over sunflowers. Milo and corn produced mourning doves near Amarillo. Hunters there said the afternoon flight was much better than the morning. Abilene and Knox City hunters had good shoots over corn and milo. The Bogota and Mount Pleasant areas enjoyed shoots over soybeans. The season runs through Oct. 31. Prospects are good. Central Zone Dove The San Antonio area produced spectacular shoots of whitewings. Outfitters said it was the best flight they can recall. Castroville and Sabinal gave up limit shoots of whitewings. Uvalde was solid as was Del Rio. Brownwood and Stephenville saw good flights of mourners. Closer to the coast, Huffman, Katy, Sealy, Columbus and Devers shot mostly mourners with a whitewing or two. Thunderstorms around the Houston area put a damper on the flight. The season runs through Oct. 31. Prospects are good....
