New Tricks for an Old Dog BCM takes the SAAMs course at the FTW Ranch By Lamar Smith Edited Co written with E Craig Smith To give yourself the best possible chance of playing to your potential, you must prepare for every eventuality. That means practice, said golfing great, Seve Ballesteros. If you give it serious thought, how many factors can you list that will change the point of impact of your shot Wind, temperature, terrain, caliber, distance are just a few of the elements in a host of game changers. Serious hunters who have a true respect for their sport, as well as the game they seek, know that honing their skills and staying proficient with their weapons is critical to success. With d eer season down the road, Spring turkey behind us and a choking drought looming large, what were your Brush Country Monsters host and producer suppose to do Yep. Practice what we preach and keep sharp. Regardless of your weapon of choice, be it the bo...

Axis Hunting Story

A few years ago I was in some prime axis habitat in Texas in early June. I ve learned over the years that stalking axis deer is a superior way to hunt them than hunting from a stand. Not only can you be more successful that way, but it is a LOT MORE FUN So there I was, crack of dawn, waiting for the KHEEEEooOOeeWWWWWW bellow of a mature axis buck. They yell out like this 3 4 times, with a couple second intervals between each bellow. It is a challenge to other males, much like an elk bugle. And then I heard one...And then another...And another... The beauty here is that when you here the bellow, you know you re dealing with an older breeding age axis. They can rut any time of the year, and mate at any time of the year. But about 70 of them rut during June July, so you get this hot period with lots of rutting activity around then. It is hot hunting but it is worth it. And only the competitive breeders bellow i.e. big studs. You can hear them from a mile away if they...

Optifade Hunting Clothes Make Hunters Invisible

Attention all deer As hunting season approaches, please be aware that the guy who s about to shoot you may be invisible. Or so he thinks. W.L Gore and Associates, working with the HyperStealth Corporation have designed a line of hunting clothes they call Optifade . These clothes, they say, fool the deer s vision system at its roots, meaning when a hunter slips into his cap, vest, pants and hood not be seen. Click Here to read more. yes, this takes you to NPR website but still interesting Has anyone else heard about this before Or better yet tried it

Is hunting your Constitutional Right

Hunters in more than a dozen states can rest easy their right to track deer or shoot pheasant has now been protected in their state constitutions. Those rights will extend to hunters in Kentucky and Wyoming if voters there agree next year, and more states may soon follow. The idea of enshrining hunting and fishing rights in state constitutions is sweeping the country even though supporters and hunters themselves acknowledge that no one is trying to in pry rifles from their hands. Thirteen states have now guaranteed the right to hunt and fish in their constitutions. Three states added the language last year Arkansas, South Carolina and Tennessee. Only Alabama, Minnesota and Vermont had such amendments before 2000. Could Texas be next Click Here to read the entire article.

Blind man on first ever duck hunt

A month prior to our group duck hunt this September, I seriously entertained the idea of cancelling it. There was no end to the drought in sight and half of the duck ponds we d have to hunt were as dry as Mother Hubbard s cupboard. Had it not been for two special hunters coming from out of state, I might ve. Their flights plans had already been booked. One guy coming from North Dakota, Carey McWilliams, is a blind hunter who would be going on his first wingshooting hunt for ducks doves. And our other non resident hunter, Dawn Ziegler, a woman from Wisconsin who writes the Outdoor Rec section for my magazine, would also be trying her hand at shotgunning for the first time afield. For years, I ve thought about how you might bird hunt without the use of sight, been wanting to take on that challenge for a long time. Well, Carey would give me that chance. He was going to make it easy for me though. He d hunted pheasant one time prior and shot well since they are noisy, straight line fl...
