Is Your Deer Hunting Lease Reaching Its Full Potential

Is Your Deer Hunting Lease Reaching Its Full Potential By Jeremy Flinn Buckscore Wildlife Biologist Each year deer hunters invest millions of dollars into hunting lease properties, including food plot planting, constructing deer stands, and especially putting gas into our tanks. A large portion of hunt clubs in the South lease their land from industrial timber companies. Nearly 85 of those white tailed deer leases practice some form of Trophy or Quality Deer Management QDM . But at the end of the season, after all the hard work and hunting hours are through, is your deer hunting lease really becoming the deer hunting mecca you dreamed of It was a hot July day as we walked through the pine stand. Last year s thinning had allowed much more sunlight to reach the ground, in turn sparking the growth of natural deer food. We headed out to a large food plot opening in which the club had called Centerfield because of its location on the property. Large, umbrella shaped weeds t...

This is the final report of the 2011 12 migratory bird hunting seasons. Weekly migratory bird hunting reports are posted from early September through early February. West Zone Goose Outfitters said they took limits of Canadas and a few snow geese to boot over corn and wheat during the last weekend of goose season. Outfitters said they were surprised at how well geese cooperated this season, despite drought conditions. The regular goose season ended Feb. 5. The Light Goose Conservation Order began Feb. 6 and few hunters took advantage of the liberal rules. Hunter participation this goose season was down overall, according to several sources. Prospects are fair. East Zone Goose Soupy fog aided e caller hunters throughout most of the week as mild temperatures persisted, but overall, hunter participation was minimal. Some outfitters reported 50 bird shoots. Goose concentrations along the coastal prairies were not consistent this year, probably due to drought conditions, however,...

Camo Patterns for Each Ecoregion in Texas

Texas has such a wide variety of ecoregions that one camouflage pattern will not work for all habitats. Within each region, the appearance of terrain and vegetation varies greatly with the season and topography. The following are some designs that blend effectively with different environments across the state. East Texas Woodlands In this region, the Realtree Hardwoods HD camouflage is a great choice for hunting the deep and often dark forests. Texas Gulf Coastal Wetlands During fall and winter, the marsh grasses and croplands are best imitated with Advantage Wetlands. South Texas Brush Country Brush Country, a company in Bryan, Texas, makes a design that synthesizes the dappled appearance of green mesquite and white thorn branches. West Texas Rangelands The Mossy Oak Brush uses an abstract background of dirt and dead grasses with foregrounds inspired by dried brush. High Plains Prairies The Prairie Ghost Ultimate pattern is intended for sagebrush country. Central Tex...

Weekly migratory bird hunting reports are posted from early September through early February. High Plains Mallard Management Unit Duck season ended Jan. 29 in the High Plains and results were below average due to the drought and lack of playa lakes. Goose season runs through Feb. 5, and outfitters who were skeptical about the season from the onset have said this season has been a banner year for decoying action. The Light Goose Conservation Order in the West Zone begins Feb.6, but outfitters are expected limited participation. North Zone Duck Duck season ended Jan. 29 and hunters agree the season was fair at best. Late season rains helped habitat and attracted more ducks, but overall hunter participation was down due to lack of water and birds in traditional backwater bayous and sloughs. Wood ducks were fair along wet timber throughout the season, and mallards improved in January, especially along the swelling Trinity River. Lots of divers were reported on Lake O Pines, Caddo La...

Weekly migratory bird hunting reports are posted from early September through early February. High Plains Mallard Management Unit Strong numbers of geese remain on Lake Etter and other watering sources near Spearman, but roosting sources remain a premium with drought conditions. Unseasonably mild conditions have encouraged geese to sit longer on roost ponds. Lubbock hunters have scored fair to good shoots over plowed ground. Sandhill crane hunting has been fair for decoying action. Duck hunting has been fair to good on playas and feed lots, though hunter participation has waned. Duck season ends at sunset Jan. 29. Goose season runs through Feb. 5. Prospects are fair to good. North Zone Duck Duck season closes at sunset Jan. 29. Fair to good hunts were posted around Franklin, Navasota and Crockett. Hunter participation has been minimal with mild conditions and poor duck numbers. Biologist Jared Laing said strange weather seems to have moved birds. Previously productive areas like...

What is the future of Quail Hunting In Texas

Texas Parks and Wildlife commissioners decided Wednesday they don t have enough information to make decisions about the future of quail hunting in Texas. Quail populations have been in a steady decline of about 2.8 percent per year for four decades, upland game bird program leader Robert Perez told members of the commission s regulations committee. The decline is symptomatic of a habitat problem, Perez said. To address the current situation, state quail managers recommended that commissioners adopt a new set of regulations that would create two quail zones, a shorter hunting season and a reduced bag limit in part of the state. One of the zones would be in the east part of the state and would have a 5 bird daily bag limit. The other zone would be in the west and would retain a 15 bird per day limit. The hunting season in both zones would close at the end of January rather than late February. CLICK HERE to read the rest of the story. What do you think the future of Quail Hunti...

Weekly migratory bird hunting reports are posted from early September through early February. High Plains Mallard Management Unit Outfitters reported great goose hunting this week with light pressure late in the season. Canada geese have readily decoyed over scouted fields. Limited watering sources have allowed hunters to pattern movement. Duck numbers are fair, but few people are hunting. Most ducks are hanging on feed lots and large reservoirs. Estimates are that less than 5 percent of playas are wet. Goose season runs through Feb.5. Prospects are fair to good. North Zone Duck Biologist Jared Laing said recent aerial surveys indicated scattered bird counts along Central and East Texas. Good densities of ducks on small and medium sized ponds near the upper Trinity, Sulfur and Sabine rivers. Water bodies along the Brazos and Red rivers are holding small concentrations. Deep Southeast Texas recorded low counts as well. Canvasbacks, scaup, ringed necks and a few goldeneyes have be...
