choosing my rifle

I have a Browning A bolt 280 with a BOSS and it is so loud you can t shoot it without some kind of hearing protection. I have to carry earplugs when I hunt. I think I will go pick up the BOSS CR at McBrides this week so I don t have to carry those plugs.

Thats awesome Chris...my daughter and I also got drawn for doe permits but ours are for the DCNF. We are pumped. I m gonna try to take her to the lease this weekend for a crossbow hunt on youth opener. Then I will be in the DCNF on rifle opener and then the following weekend I will be back at the DCNF with my daughter to try to fill the doe tags. My hunting buddy will have his 3 boys out there on the second weekend, so we are going to have a big youth camp hunt weekend. Will have plenty of pics when I return.

Antler Pics

I love finding sheds, kinda like a bonus. Very cool, hope you find another one of those big East Texas bucks to chase this fall. I will be in your neck of the woods for rifle opener...my brother and I will be hunting the DCNF. We are taking off early Friday morning before opener to get a decent camping spot and maybe scout the Big Slough Wilderness area for some of those big East Texas swamp bucks. We will be camping at the camp off of HWY 21. We plan on doing some rattling and filming, hope we get lucky...pray for cold weather. A buddy I hunt with was hunting the DCNF bow season 1998 and shot a nice 8 pt that went 126 and is in P Y. He found one of the bucks sheds while he was tracking the buck after the shot and the buck would have been bigger the previous year. There was a drought in East Texas that year so the deer didn t get the same nutrition.

Whackin and Stackin

Well guys I went back to the lease yesterday to try for a doe and got lucky again. My brother and I got to the lease at about 5 25pm and headed for our stands. I hunted one of the front stands instead of the stand where I shot the buck because the wind was from the north. The evening was pretty uneventful until right at last light. I noticed movement about 30 yards behind the feeder, picked up the binos and a nice doe was headed my way. The doe headed off to the left and circled around to the feeder. It was getting late so I had to turn on the Twilite Pin Light that Alan gave me on the texashuntfish.com hog hunt a few years ago. The doe posed broadside just 20 yards away so I drew, aimed and released. Thawack, I knew it was a good hit. The doe ran maybe 5 yards and then kind of strolled away. I heard her crash but knew better than to just head over for a look. I waited for the last 15 minutes of light to fade and headed to the truck. I met my brother halfway and we decided to go get th...

Savage 110E

Savage is a good brand and makes a solid gun. Their rifles may not have all the bells and wistles but I bet it will shoot good enough to kill some deer. I personally have never owned a Savage but wouldn t shy away from buying one if I came across a good deal. The 30 06 caliber will be very versatile for you if you get to go after some lager game than whitetails. You can find plenty of different ammo brands for the 06 but I bet the 140 to 150gr bullets will do well in the rifle.

Thanks guys, we are pumped. bad thing is this could be the last year for hunting the area because of the Parmer Lane extention. Things are looking good, we put the camera out last Saturday afternoon and these pictures were on it monday along with 140 more. The deer really took to the high protein corn mix we have in the feeders. We also have big water barrels that the deer really use. The lease is only 20 acres but it is just 15 minutes from my front door an covered with deer. It s a cool lease because we also get to hunt crossbow during rifle season and with the new antler restriction we get to take out some of the spike bucks. The crossbow hunting allows us to take the kids for an evening deer hunt and be home for dinner. Next we have to setup the ranch for rifle. We are hoping to get the hogs coming in and maybe a few deer for rifle. I will be headed down there this weekend to fill the feeders and fix up some blinds. I m sure we will do a little fishing. Will post pics if I rememb...
